The reception area here at Applewood Inn, Restaurant and Spa. This is where we greet our guests upon check-in, and serve them a glass of wine or champagne.

This is Greve, one of our Veranda Rooms. It is located on the second floor of Piccola Casa. It has a King-size bed with Tempur-Pedic mattress and Italian linen. It also has a shower for two, a cozy fireplace, and a shared covered veranda. Moss green walls and a bank of windows opposite the bed presents a view of redwood trees.

Great little write up about our new chef Jamil Peden and the direction of our restaurant.
Applewood Inn and Restaurant has a new chef, Jamil Peden, who hopes to bring the West Sonoma County restaurant back to its former glory

My Fiancé and I were traveling through. Googled this place and thought we would stop for a romantic dinner. After some time we were finally noticed and seated. The maître d asked us if we would like wine or ice water. We both loved wine but we were driving so just asked for "ice tea" the maître d response to our request by saying, "Hhhmmm.... ice tea." Almost as if we were very wrong for asking for such beverage. We both thought this was very odd. The menu was very small and VERY EXPENSIVE! We waited for some time and never received our ice tea. We finally decided to leave. It felt so good to get out of that place! We drove down the road and found a fabulous restaurant along the ocean. Would not recommend Applewood Inn to anyone. It did not feel romantic at all. It felt uptight and stuffy.

Food is good, but nothing spectacular. At least the dish I had wasn't something to remember for days, but there were some that were. The service was exceptional to the very end, very attentive considering it was one person for about a handful of tables. I can see why they have a michelin star.

Cute & classy historic inn. We had the best experience with Sylvia in reservations. In the heart of wine country. A little overpriced for the experience, but still a great time.

We stayed at this Inn. Our challenges began with Caitlin, who was at best impersonal and did not seem suited for the job. Every time we asked her for help, it felt like it was an imposition. And then when we asked who could get the work done, she said, "I guess it would be me". Her sidekick in the front office was very nice when Caitlin was not around, but equally distant and impersonal when the two were together. The restaurant staff were terrific. A+. The room was OK, even though we had one of the best ones. The champagne that had been ordered was not delivered. It was supposed to have been included in the room--we were charged for it. There was so much dust in the room, that the AC blew it around, causing sleep to be difficult. The deck outside our room was not clean, and there were critters in the room. The massage staff, however, was fantastic. At the end of the day, we figure the owner had a great concept, the buildings are nice, but the entire experience was negatively impacted from the beginning by the 2 front office women who could not have cared less, did not understand what "customer service" meant, and did not manage the operation for cleanliness. Visit at your own risk.

Response from the owner - 4 months ago
Dear Mr. Marshall, As Applewood's owner I personally apologize for not performing to your expectations. My efforts to make sure that guests are informed about what to expect at Applewood sometimes fail. In our site home page, in a prominent position I ask our future guest to take a test to verify that they and Applewood are a match. They would realize for example that we are surrounded by redwoods, so guest would not be surprised if a spider shows in their room or expect baggage handlers in our small bed and breakfast, or request that our hostess would handle their luggage. We surely made a mistake in not recording your request for a bottle of champagne awaiting in your room, but what is strange is that we simply do not handle the brand you told us you had requested. A quick look at the reviews in this and other forums will attest to the warmth and professionalism of our hostess/concierge team. I often get glowing reviews about Kaitlin specifically. Something went very wrong in your interaction and I again apologize and wish you happy travels. Carlos F. Pippa

A favorite spot for special occasions - the building itself is a treat too. It may not be an official historic building, but it is worth checking out before or after you eat. Applewood Inn is surrounded by orchards and redwoods, so you have a taste of local agriculture (and the fantastic onsite gardens and orchards that contribute to your meal) and the majestic redwoods for which the region is known. The wine (and beer) list is extensive and we appreciate the highly educated recommendations of the servers. One even went into the kitchen and asked the chef which was a better pairing for our meal - what a treat! Food is a blend of high-class California fusion and yummy European epicurean.

Start with the Artichoke soup - silky and flavorful; end with the Meyer lemon tart from their new pastry chef. Both surprising and excellent! In between you won't go wrong with any of the starters and entrees. Peculiar corkage policy, but good wine list that ends with a Pride Mountain Vineyards Mistelle de Viognier - just enough Sauvignon Blanc to give the floral layers structure. While you sip, enjoy the fire, architecture and view.
