Thought I'd submit this editorial...

MAKES SENSE TO ME

It's 2016.

We have 'smart' TV's. We have 'smart' cars. Why don't we have 'smart' traffic signals?

Pardon me for not seeing the rationale for having to sit at a light and wait for...no one else. Why did we start using the flashing yellow turn arrow? Wasn't it to allow us to proceed when it was free and clear to do so? Why can't we do that with the whole light? Specifically, the ones that are not 4-way intersections. When I say 'free and clear' I really mean that you can get out of your car and walk to the other side and back without any harm. Also, if you can't safely maneuver and execute a left-handed turn in a matter of 4.5 seconds during light traffic times, day or night, you probably have no business operating a moving vehicle. FLASHING YELLOW LIGHTS! We need more of them.

Another aspect of the 'smart light system' would be that they have flashing strobe lights on them that would activate when emergency vehicles are moving through - so as to add an extra warning to the drivers that are somewhat clueless of what's going on around them (and there are plenty of those, trust me). To avoid exorbitant costs, let's try these only at the major intersections.

I'm not the smartest valley resident but my understanding is that in the state of Arizona driving is not a right but a privilege. Believe me when I tell you I feel very little privilege watching those who opt to speed through yellow and red lights at intersections. Why? It's simple. They hate having to wait at all the little lights for no good reason. Can someone please explain how it helps the flow of traffic when 10 or more cars on either side of the road have to stop at a light and wait for maybe 2 or 3 cars, when those cars could have gone long before that, when there was a suitable gap to make their turns? I patiently wait for an answer to that question.

Then there was the idea to add extra lights to allow people to cross traffic safely at canals? Why are they crossing at the canal? They can go around the other side. They can wait for a lull to cross. Or if exercise is what they are after, they can use the nearest crosswalk, which is already for them. Cars only have roads to drive on. Pedestrians can go everywhere else. Thank you for making traffic stop for 30 seconds when it takes less than 10 seconds to cross. That wasn't what I paid taxes for, was it? Not sure what the cost was, start to finish, for each of those but was it worth it for 4 or 5 people per day to cross the road that hundreds are driving on day in and day out?

Okay, you got me. I get paid to drive so I'm out on the road quite a bit. That doesn't make me an expert, but it does make me a professional. This is not merely a rant, it's a logical, sensible proposal to the powers that be.

Or must we wait for efficiency and innovation until 2017, or longer?

What keeps us happy and healthy as we go through life? If you think it's fame and money, you're not alone – but, according to psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, you're mistaken. As the director of a 75-year-old study on adult development, Waldinger has unprecedented access to data on true happiness and satisfaction. In this talk, he shares three important lessons learned from the study as well as some practical, old-as-the-hills wisdom on how to buil...
