More than 100 million Americans suffer chronic back pain, a staggering figure that costs hundreds of billions annually in lost productivity and medical intervention.

Over the past two decades, U.S. patients have increasingly resorted to spinal fusion surgery to deal with chronic back and neck pain, but studies in recent years have shown a surprising outcome: over the long-haul, the surgery is ineffective.

According to the National Institutes of Health, spinal fusions increased by 137 percent between 1998 and 2008, more than any other surgery, including hip replacements, knee replacements and heart bypass.

If you or a loved one has a disability that makes it difficult, or impossible, to use common eating utensils, get acquainted with Obi, "an innovative robotic feeding device, bringing independence and dignity back to the simple activity of eating a meal." Simply put, Obi is a robotic arm with a spoon and four bowls that moves towards the disabled diner's mouth so they can eat. Each bowl can be filled with a different part of the meal if the diner likes their food separated, and it can even hold liquids like soup and cereal.

Chinese herbal medicine has been around for thousands of years and has been known to treat various ailments affecting the human body. Although knowledge of potential benefits has been passed down through the years, there haven’t been many modern controlled experiments to verify or debunk claims about Chinese herbal medicine.

A group of researchers in Canada published a study they conducted analyzing the effects of a type of Chinese herbal medicine, Ji-Sui-Kang, on acute spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats. They found that the herbal formulation may help the recovery of SCI in humans.

Located on the bottom and at the side of each of the two brain hemispheres, the #temporal lobes are responsible for the primary organization of sensory input. When damage occurs to these areas of the #brain, patients may experience disturbance of auditory sensation and perception, an inability to pay attention to what they see or hear, impaired ability to comprehend language, impaired factual and long term memory, emotional disturbance, and altered sexual behaviors. They may also have #seizures, lose their sense of humor, and become obsessive.

Brain and spinal cord injuries don’t just affect the survivor. They also affect the family of the survivor. In many cases, it is up to family members to take care of the physical, emotional, economic, and social needs of the survivor. While caretaking can be extremely rewarding, it can also be frustrating, overwhelming, and lonely. The following six rules are designed to help the caretaker cope.
