Along with my commitment of using ‪#‎Kodak‬ film exclusively for my professional, editorial, school and personal work, I’ve made a personal commitment to purchase photographic tools from as many ‪#‎AmericanMade‬ businesses as possible. One such product is the Legacy Leather Wrist Strap from TAP & DYE, proudly made by hand in New York in small batches, allowing each strap an insane amount of personal attention. The fact of knowing one person made my strap from scratch all the way to packing it for shipping, truly makes my customer experience with the brand priceless in this era of mass production. I trust no other strap hold my heavy pro cameras. My Nikon F5, F3, F100 and D200 each have one. These straps are so hefty and feel so good on your wrist that they magically make heavy cameras like the ‪#‎NikonF5‬ light as feather. I mean look at this beast of a camera! It’s gonna eat that poor little roll of ‪#‎Portra400‬ for dinner like nothing!

Over this and last year, I’ve taken a Nikon F5, a ‪#‎NikonF100‬, a Nikon N75 all with 50mm Nikkors loaded with ‪#‎Fuji400H‬, Kodak Portra 400 and Kodak Gold, with me each time I head out to ‪#‎Tijuana‬. Each camera and film combination producing a different look from that last. Because of this, I've gathered a healthy, but by no means definitive, collection of photos. I’ve mostly concentrated on the outskirts of the city, places seldom seen by tourists, with some familiar sights thrown here and there. With each trip, I see something new at every turn, discover new streets, new taxi routes, new city ‘rules’ and the way things work. You know, those unwritten rules only the locals know. Which ahhh..... none seem to be coming to my mind as I write this post. Guess I’ll do a follow up next year. Photos live on the blog now. bit.ly/TijuanaTeQuiero

Today marked my final day of not only my first semester of college but my first official photography class, Introduction To Black & White Photography & Lab Processing. You might be asking, “but David! Why are you taking a noob class!? But David! Why are you taking a Black & White class!? You use color. But David! You have a great lab,@colorservices to take care of all your film processing needs!” Worry not Instagram reader, I hear your concerns, I too contemplated on whether or not to take two days off work per week to essentially ‘learn’ things I already knew. I gotta’ tell ya though, it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my adult life, by far. Not only did I actually learn new things, but also gained the confidence to properly use Black & White film for the @fer_uli editorial and the Modern Zombie Romance editorial, beautifully modeled by both @andiface and @ohdanielsan. Most importantly though, I made new friends, that alone made my thirty minute uphill power walk to school as my straw hat disintegrated in 100˚ weather all worth while. Gonna miss my class mates, I’m sure I’ll be seeing a few of them come spring semester though. It’s a happy sad feeling.

I'm a daydreamer, always have been, though, I think as creative types we naturally tend to be. Muggles however, can't understand why we do it, we just do. Often I daydream of regions far far way to call home. But ahhhh, since I’m not one of the privilaged few, I gotta make with what I have in my backyard. One such place is #MariachiPlaza, located in the East side neighborhood of #BoyleHeights in #LosAngeles. To be exact, I’m in love with the Boyle Hotel-Cummings Block. Every time I drive or walk by it, I stand there, starring at it for minutes at a time and daydream about living there, hosting cocktail parties and taking photos outside. I was fortunate enough to use the building as a backdrop for our @sincolormusic editorial this past #summer. We ended up splitting the editorial into three days to allow for multiple looks and locations. Be sure sure to follow Sin Color as I hear they many a great things planned for 2016. View the editorial on the blog now. http://syntheticcolor.net/

Was gonna post few out takes from our Modern Zombie Romance next week, but with the lost roll of ‪#‎KodakGold‬ I found laying around in the fridge, I had enough photos to put a blog post together. Armed with three different ‪#‎Kodak‬ stocks, a ‪#‎NikonF100‬ and a brand new ‪#‎Nikkor‬ 50mm f/1.8 AF-S Special Edition lens, we set out to create a cheesy dorky ‪#‎zombie‬ attack ‪#‎engagementsession‬. It was my first editorial with all Kodak film and wanted to compare Gold with ‪#‎Portra400‬ and honestly, I can’t tell the difference between the photos shot on Gold and those shot on Portra. Happy to know I can use both films during a ‪#‎wedding‬ without it affecting color consistency. It’s always said one should never test new gear/techniques with clients, and for that, I’m eternally grateful for all my models that participated in this cheesy editorial. Now ya’ll run down to the blog and check out the rest of the photos. http://syntheticcolor.net

With 2015 behind us, I look forward to the three hundred and sixty five new opportunities the ‪#‎newyear‬ arrives with, both in my personal and professional life. However, I wouldn’t be here as an artist without the help of my ‪#‎beautiful‬ clients who’ve entrusted me to photograph their most important day in their new life as a married couple, their ‪#‎weddingday‬. I’m eternally grateful as they’ve accepted me as a part of their growing family. Funny how growing up I disliked weddings because that was how all telenovelas ended and we’d had to sit through our relative’s two hour static wedding VHS video and yellowing cold wedding photos. I didn’t want that for my wedding photos, I wanted something different, something I would love to share with my children down the road, something that was timeless. Picked up a ‪#‎filmcamera‬, some ‪#‎35mm‬ film and set out to become a famous photographer while helping future bride & grooms create the same elegant timeless photos I’d love to see on my own ‪#‎wedding‬ day. And here I am, nowhere near Instagram famous yet, but hey! You never freaking know, this could be the year it happens, here’s to #2016!

Browsing through Instagram last ‪#‎summer‬, I bumped into a photo of a ‪#‎beautiful‬ mademoiselle in ‪#‎Maleficent‬ ‪#‎cosplay‬. Was very impressed at how real the ‪#‎makeup‬ and horns looked, that I reached out to the makeup artist, borrowed a bootleg copy of the movie my from Aunt and set out on a ‪#‎sunny‬ winter day to take these magical VSCOesque photos. I used expired Fujifilm Pro160S, hence the strong color shift towards magenta and green. Giving the photos the popular ‪#‎VSCO‬ look that floods Instagram and wedding blogs. Which I fail to completely understand, I mean, wouldn't it be easier to just shoot real ‪#‎film‬? I love the look, don't get me wrong, I just find it easier to use film if I want my photos look like film, ‪#‎keepfilmalive‬!

I’ve noticed my bio says ‪#‎weddingphotographer‬ yet, when I browse though my own IG, I hardly see any#wedding photos at all, lol. So, over the following weeks, I’ll be posting more wedding photos, with a few ‪#‎quince‬ photos thrown in there. I’ll talk about what I personally loved about their wedding, i.e.‪#‎weddingdress‬, decorations, venues, etc. Today, I'm happy to feature @x_alondra_x’s‪#‎quinceañera‬ I photographed last ‪#‎summer‬ in ‪#‎Palmdale‬. She opted for a backyard ceremony and reception, allowing her ‪#‎boho‬ inspired ‪#‎outfit‬ to have a ‪#‎beautiful‬ summer afternoon glow. And thanks to our vast desert landscape, we were able to capture some truly unique Quince photos seldom seen on social media.
