* Meet 7 year old 'Ollie' *

Veterinary Surgeon Chad Northcott has just seen Ollie for his Annual Health Examination. Ollie lost one eye when he was a kitten and his other eye became so badly damaged last year, following a ruptured ulcer, that we had to remove that one too. Believe it or not, this gorgeous cat runs around the house, stalks AND catches birds in the garden, and chases stranger cats away from his territory. A hero indeed!!

Needless to say, we gave him his Milpro tapeworm preventive treatment today in addition to his vaccination.

Paws 4 Thought

Always ready to offer support in the local community - yesterday Veterinary Surgeon Chad Northcott visited Bolton Technology Centre to give a presentation to a group of very keen and enthusiastic school children on cats and preventive health.

This was one of a series of visits supporting a project called 'Paws 4 Thought'. It is funded by the National Lottery and the grant was awarded to Atherton and Wigan Cats Protection Branch. They have commissioned the service of Cats Protection to develop an after school club to help to educate children and their parents about cat behaviour and care, particularly aimed at areas with high incidences of neglect.

Groups attend for 6 weeks, making cat toys and boxes to take to the Cat Centre in Warrington, making cat ceramics to help raise funds, creating animations and even making chocolate cats!

It is great to be able to support local initiatives. And, did you know, last year alone we neutered more than 80 cats per week for local charities!

Firework fears and noise phobias are common problems in pets with at least 80% of pets being scared of fireworks

A dog may show ‘fear of a noise’ such as a car backfiring, as it may never have heard it before, nor be able to localise where the noise came from and thus show fearful behaviour.
However, normally a dog can recognise noises with actions, such as doors slamming and people clapping, and understand what each is and then accept these as part of everyday life.
A dog that has a severe ‘noise sensitivity’ is actually a dog that is generalising all loud noises, such as claps, doors banging, fireworks and TV sounds, as fearful and thus responds in an extreme physical or irrational way.
The most common noises that dogs have phobias to are:
thunderstorms, fireworks, vacuum cleaners, gunshots and construction noises.

We can help with all of the above. Read our Fireworks Newsletter at:
http://www.vetcareltd.co.uk/vetcare-news/news.shtml

And read more about Noise phobias at:

Call in to chat to reception or make an appointment to see the Veterinary Surgeon, we are here to help.
