Most pearl buyers experience difficulty in choosing which pearl to buy because of their overtones.

Most women prefer white pearls with rose overtones compared to those with silver and cream overtones.

White pearls with rose overtones compliments women with fair skin while women with darker skin tone prefer pearls with silver overtones.

Pearls reflect the surrounding colours, the higher the grade of the pearl the more reflective it will be.

South Sea Pearls are amongst the largest commercially harvested cultured Pearls in the world, with an average size of a South Sea Pearl being 13mm with most harvests producing a range of sizes from 9mm to 20mm.

The South Seas lie between the Northern coast of Australia and the Southern coast of China. These waters are the native territory of a large oyster known as Pinctada Maxima. The particular oyster grows up to 12 inches in a diameter and can be nucleated with a much larger bead than the other saltwater oysters. Furthermore, it is harvested for a minimum of two years. The South Seas are filled with 'Plankton' which is the Pinctada Maxima's preferred food source, which along with being surrounded by clean water; speeds up the nacre production.

The South Sea Pearl grows this large due to the size of the oyster complimented by the warm water which hurries up the metabolism of the oyster. In addition to that, the large size occurs due to the length of time the oyster is left to grow and the size of the bead which is implanted.

www.umipearls.com offers high quality South Sea pearl jewellery.

Did you know?

Both pearls and teeth are made from calcium compounds. A pearl is made up of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, whereas our teeth are made of hydroxylapatite (calcium carbonate-phosphate).

So that is why pearls are known to be timeless jewellery, and will last longer especially when we take good care of them. Read through our http://umipearls.com/Caring-for-your-Pearls.html to learn more on how to care for your pearls.

Have you seen #pearls with ridges or rings around their body?
These pearls are called Circled Pearls.

Circle Pearls are natural and have distinct features that makes a wearer stand-out. They are most common in Freshwater pearls, but can also be in South Sea pearls and Tahitian pearls.

Tahitian pearls are formed from the black lip oyster. Often referred to as black pearls. Valued for its rarity, black pearls comes in various shapes, sizes, and colors: they are usually shades of green, purple, blue, grey, silver or peacock and a mix of several different shades and shapes include round, semi-round, button, circle, oval, teardrop, semi-baroque and baroque.

The Legend
Oro, god of the heavens often watched his children below. He would often visit the earth by riding a brilliant rainbow down to the island people, giving mother of pearls its iridescence. As one of the most powerful and respected gods, he reigned over the heavens with graciousness and fairness. He rewarded the Tahitians with nurturing sunshine and life giving rain.

The cultured Tahitian pearls
Inserted with the bead is a piece of mantle tissue from a donor mollusk, which influences the color of the pearl being produced and provides epithelial cells to ensure that the oyster produces nacre around the nucleus. The materials used in the process are organic, to decrease the probability of the oyster rejecting the nucleus. The shell is sanded and rounded to form the bead, so the pearls produced have a rounder shape. The whole process takes place quickly, because oysters cannot survive very long out of water.

At UMI Pearls we offer the finest quality Tahitian Pearls. Visit our website - www.umipearls.com or schedule your visit to our showroom!
