Today is choreographer George Balanchine's birthday.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia (1904), he danced at the Mariinsky, went on to choreograph for the Ballets Russes in Paris before, thankfully, coming to the US and establishing the School of American Ballet and the New York City Ballet.
Famous for his artistic partnership with his lifelong friend composer Igor Stravinsky
, Balanchine created some of the most celebrated ballets of the 20th century to the music of Stravinsky and others: Apollo, Agon, The Four Temperaments, Orpheus, Jewels, Serenade, to name a few.
Though he died in 1983, his ballets are still performed worldwide and are as vibrant as ever. Thank you Mr. Balanchine. I raise a glass of vodka to you!
