- They want you to stop the illegal occupation. That in itself is an act of war in international law.Jul 23, 2014
- The local branch of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign is one of the groups I am trying to extricate myself from in Berwick. I went to two meetings and found that they live in a bubble of human rights discourse completely detached from Realpolitik. I am now receiving a flurry of emails urging me to go on marches etc, putting forward an interpretation of the situation where Hamas does not exist and neither for that matter does any other aspect of Middle East politics. I read a book called Inside Hamas, by Zaki Chehab, himself a Palestinian, which seems to take the view that Israel is absolutely sick of the whole situation and really wants a negotiated peace, but the problem is there is nobody to make peace with, because there is no organisation with the authority to negotiate on behalf of all the Palestinian people. Admittedly this is partly Israel's own fault because it has deliberately encouraged factionalism and division among Palestinians as a way of weakening them - it is well known that Israel originally supported Hamas as a way of undermining Fatah - but one assumes that the self interest of both sides will eventually prevail over ideological posturing. Whereas the PSC in this country seems entirely stuck in ideological and moral posturing.Jul 24, 2014
