I've never really been shy about being a "Mormon", but I've rarely taken the opportunity to be really open about my faith, especially in Jesus Christ. With all the challenges around the world, I'm grateful for the deep and very real strength I have found in believing in and striving to live according to Christ's teachings. My faith in Christ and my trust in God has given me peace, purpose and direction.

In this Christmas season I invite my friends and family everywhere to join me in discovering or rediscovering "why" #ASaviorIsBorn

The Meridian Idaho Temple has been under construction for just over a year. The exterior precast panels are all in place. The huge crane used to place those large panels was just taken away. Mechanical trades are hard at work on the interior. The chapel on the property is mostly done framing. I drive by the temple twice each day, going to and from work. Being in the construction industry, I'm particularly interested in the entire process and the daily progress. As I pass the temple each day I offer a prayer for the safety of the workers. I ask that angels will attend them and help them perform with skills beyond their natural capabilities and that the temple might be their finest work of craftsmanship. I pray for the workers and their families, that they will be touched by the special spirit of the temple. Although I don't get to work on the temple myself, at least my prayers can help contribute to its construction.

Christmas 1977 was my first Christmas and there was a full moon. I was born the very day Elvis Presley died and the doctor witnessed my full moon. That was 38 years ago. Joseph Smith was 38 when he was killed by the mob. Joseph Smith was born a couple days before Christmas during a full moon. Isaac Newton was born on Christmas and made calculations about the moon. Christmas was Elvis' favorite holiday and he sang "Blue Moon". Christmas is my favorite holiday. Coincidence? I think not. #IlluminatiConfirmed 🌕🔺👁

Sharing enthusiasm for birds, birding, bird photography, and bird blogging!
Introduction
BIRDING:

I began birding in the summer of 2004 when my father-in-law Lynn Davenport handed me a pair of binoculars to go on a Sunday afternoon walk at Lake Lowell (Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge) in Nampa, Idaho. Birding was an instant addiction.

Married to Jessica since 1999, we have four children that keep us hoppin'. I served a LDS Mission in Rosario, Argentina from 1996-1998 and still speak Spanish fairly fluently. Unfortunately I was not yet a birder and missed all those great South American species.

I grew up in Nampa, Idaho and graduated from Nampa High School in 1995. I received a bachelor's degree in Construction Management in 2002 from Brigham Young University with a minor in Management from the Marriott School of Business. Being in the construction industry, my family and I have been on the move every few years following the work. We've had wonderful adventures in South Carolina, Arizona, Utah, and Idaho. The Mortensen's hope to put down their own roots in the Boise area.

A "well-rounded nerd", my other interests include adventures with my family, serving in my church and the Boy Scouts of America, enjoying college football (BYU & BSU), history, politics, reading, family history/genealogy, and music. I play clarinet and saxophone and enjoy singing too.

I like to be a part of fun bird events. In late 2011, I was appointed the American Birding Association Bird of the Year Coordinator and I enjoy making silly videos to promote this program. I also assisted the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival committee in 2012. In 2013, I hosted the first Boise Bird Festival. I've been leading bird walks since 2009 at Avimor in the foothills north of Eagle/Boise. I usually host a Big Sit! each October too.

PROFESSIONAL:

I grew up on the job site...picking up construction trash, sweeping out houses, packing lumber for the framers, and getting paid with root bear floats. The passion for building got into my blood. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelors degree in Construction Management coupled with a minor in management from the Marriott School of Business.

I have worked as a home building superintendent for large national builders in various parts of the country. Seven years of my career was as purchasing manager for SunCor Development in both Arizona and in Boise for the Avimor master planned community. Recently I worked for Aspire Design, the largest full-service remodeling company in the country coordinating the repairs of bank-owned properties around the country for resale. In 2012, I worked with my dad in the family home building business and in 2013 I returned to Avimor, working as purchasing and construction manager for the new ownership.

Industry service and the love of Scouting runs in the family. I have also served as a Scoutmaster and has volunteered in the Boy Scouts of America for many years. I also served as membership chair for the BCASWI while working for Avimor. My wife Jessica and I have four children, one boy and three girls.
