NEWS | 2016 was a record-breaking year for organ donation in Australia, proving that the National Reform program is working. However; there are some calls for an opt-out system to be introduced.

Scotland is currently consulting on reform of the organ donation system. This discussion piece is by Doctor Gordon Macdonald: "If we introduce an arrangement which results in the taking of people’s organs after death without direct and honouring engagement with their personhood prior to death we cannot guarantee that the organs are given freely and with consent and, therefore, the donor’s personhood is potentially disrespected."

NEWS | A big shout out to Brisbane’s George Constantinou who celebrates the 30th anniversary of his heart transplant on Friday (February 17).

George was just 21 when he suffered cardiomyopathy and was flown to St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney to receive a heart transplant in an operation performed by the late Victor Chang. George was the 67th heart transplant at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney.

In speaking with George he reports 30 years of good health, and despite advice about the potential of picking up viruses from cats, loves his volunteer role as a cat rescuer.
‘It is great to be able to give these cats a home, keep them indoors and protect our native wildlife.’ Just another way transplantation keeps giving back.

NEWS | There have been fresh calls to regulate herbal medications after experts writing in +Medical Journal of Australia said some herbal remedies sold on the Australian market could contain chemicals, natural toxins, heavy metals or pesticides - ingredients which could cause complications such as kidney failure or liver damage.

Six donated organs have gone to patients who had taken a herbal supplement in the last five years.
