Gerrit Dou "The Hermit" dated 1670 - I have stood before this painting many more times than I can count. It is at the National Gallery, and each time I see it the amazement never fades. Dou was the founder of the Dutch "Fijnschilders" group (literally "fine-painters"). This small painting is filled with tiny, very detailed, symbolic objects and subject matter related to a contemplative life. If you go view it, take your magnifier glasses. Dou presents items that mirror the shortness of life. There is the skull, hourglass, extinguished lantern, and empty jug, all to remind us of our limited time on earth. The details of the painting are unsurpassed, from tiny threads in the draped cloth, to dirt under the Hermit's finger nails. Nothing is suggested in the handling of the paint, but instead, is drawn and rendered with accurate draftsmanship. Since there were no photographs to rely on at the time, artist collected their own still life objects. The pieces in this painting appear again and again in Dou's other paintings. Today, it is easy to spot still life paintings that are done from life by a competent draftsmen verses those that rely on photographs. Drawing from life seems to be a dying art. Dou wrote that good painting was simply an extension of good drawing. Looking at his work, it is clearly evident that he practiced what he preached.

Ecce Ego, Quia Vocasti Me. Netherlandish painter Rogier van der Weyden...my favorite Deposition painted in 1436. Mary's collapse echoes the pose of her son, such sadness expressed in one painting is almost overwhelming.
