Hawaii artist Makana was among the few entertainers invited to perform as part of the official APEC program here in Honolulu. And with such rare access to some of the world's most powerful people, he revealed an "Occupy With Aloha" shirt, and slipped his new original ballad, "We Are The Many," into his set.
"My goal was not to disturb the guests in an offensive fashion but rather to subliminally fill their ears and the entire dinner atmosphere with a message that might be more effectively received in a subconscious manner," he writes. "At first, I was worried about playing ‘We Are The Many.' But I found it odd that I was afraid to sing a song I’d written, especially since I'd written it with these people in mind."
