Content Producer, 2009 - present
As a producer of radio and television shows I select and research subjects and organise programmes. I am responsible for broadcasts running smoothly, including briefing presenters and guests, supervising live transmission and reviewing shows. I also produce online material and oversee some IT procurement, configuration and training.
Achievements have included:

Devising an innovative programme and topic planning schedule to allows programming decisions to be made in advance,

Creating a new youth-orientated radio show within a tight budget.
Senior Advisor Internal Communications, 2008 - 2009
As the Senior Internal Communications Advisor within this large multi-national oil consortium based in Kazakhstan, I was responsible for generating good news stories and facilitating internal and external communication. The role included investigating and writing articles for the intranet and internal newsletters as well as assisting others write articles, reports and submissions. This was a challenging role within a diverse and multi-lingual environment but one where I could use my skills to develop the company's communication channels. Achievements included:
Creating positive press coverage,
Writing a style guide for publications and developing my technical writing skills,
Improving my skills using graphic and illustration software,
Devising and analysing company surveys,
Producing HSE guidance,

Political Correspondent - Scotland on Sunday, 2000 - 2008
At Scotland on Sunday newspaper, Scotland's top-selling broadsheet, I was responsible for providing in-depth analysis of UK political developments and issues. In this dynamic role I had to undertake in-depth research to ensure that the stories I wrote appealed to the newspaper's readers. With changes at the newspaper my role expanded to cover other areas including technology, health and medicine, education, business, law, home affairs, crime, religion, transport, consumer issues, and foreign news. At times I acted up as the newspaper's foreign editor.
Achievements and skills learned or developed include:
Twice winning the Scottish Gaelic Journalist of the Year award, and short-listed for a number of other awards,
Responsible for covering major stories including the Scottish and UK elections, the G8 Summit in Scotland, the aftermath of terrorist incidents in the UK and Russia, and the Soccer World Cup in Germany,
Making early use of the new Freedom of Information Act to seek out information and highlight topics of public concern which were used as the basis for a number of important stories,
Developing the newspaper's first podcasts,
Designing and implementing a simple to use digital audio archiving system,
Selecting and assessing software products for the Company.
Political Correspondent, 1999 - 2000
With the introduction of the new Scottish Parliament in 1999, the BBC required a team to cover the election in and the new legislature. This role involved liaising with the senior editors at the BBC news headquarters and keeping them abreast of political developments and advising on coverage. In addition, I was responsible for originating and covering news stories for radio, interviewing MSPs and others, and editing and presenting features and news programmes.
Achievements and skills learned or developed include:
Being top analyst/pundit on the election night radio show,
Identifying a number of exclusive stories,
Developed a robust Scottish parliamentary reporting template to ensure that stories were interesting and informative.
Broadcast Journalist, 1993 - 1999
As a key member of the BBC Radio team I covered breaking news in Glasgow and Edinburgh and other stories such as the 1997 UK Election, the run-up to the new Scottish Parliament, the development of the Scottish oil industry, the drive towards renewable energy and the fortunes of the whisky industry. Working independently I had to identify, develop, edit and report on these stories, as well as covering breaking news. Furthermore, I spent time working in a producer/editor role which saw me manage a team of others in a range of locations. Achievements included:
Developing the use of digital audio editing and production within BBC radio,
Exposing a number of major stories, including a race abuse scandal in the Scottish prosecution service,
Leading coverage of a major criminal trial,
Developing election and political coverage through Gaelic.
Producer, 1992 - 1993
This involved editorial and technical supervision of news and current affairs programmes for the BBC's Gaelic radio service. In addition to generating and originating stories, I supervised others in their investigation, scripting, and presentation of news stories and features. I managed the output of both staff and freelance contributors and both commissioned and oversaw work from journalists based away from my location. I worked on both live and recorded programmes and was also an IT superuser on a Unix-based system. Achievements included:
Developing management and editorial skills,
Developing youth-style news bulletins.
Programme Assistant, 1991 - 1992
Duties combined those of a radio studio technician and manager with those of junior radio news reporter for the BBC's Gaelic radio service. The job involved technical supervision of programmes, editing, mixing and transmission of radio features and programmes. I worked on both live and recorded programmes, news, music, historical features, documentaries and speech discussion programmes. The journalistic element of the job involved originating and covering news stories for radio, interviewing, and editing and presenting radio features. Achievements included:
Covering a series of major breaking stories, including collapse of the controversial BCCI bank in the UK.
Taught myself Teeline Shorthand from books by studying each night.
