It was my partner's birthday, and he wanted to go somewhere nice and well-reviewed in Kansas City. We had not been to Lidia's, so he selected to go there because of the reviews we had seen online. Maybe it was an off night, but I'm not so sure the reviewers of Lidia's have been eating at the same place I went. We made reservations, even though I'm not really sure we needed them for the night we went because it wasn't very busy. We were promptly seated and brought bread, which was probably the highlight of the meal, and some sort of olive hummus and basil hummus. I don't like olives, so I can't comment on that, but the basil hummus was pretty good. Our waitress came and wasn't the most friendly. Maybe it was because she had too many tables, but it seemed like if we asked too many questions, we would have gotten yelled at. I ordered the wild boar ravioli, and my partner had the pasta trio, which many people have raved about on here. We also got Caesar salads that were brought out first. The Caesar salads were not that great. Something about the dressing was too acidic for my tastes, and the lettuces were too drenched in the dressing. Luckily the croutons in the salad were good, and there was plenty of parmesan cheese, but I wanted the salad to be better overall. When the pasta came out, my disappointment grew even more. The wild boar ravioli tasted like Hamburger Helper inside pasta. It was all right, but certainly not something I'd order again. Where the real problem came was the pasta trio. It's touted as Lidia's signature dish, and it's unlimited pasta, but the word "unlimited" should be the tip-off to what you're about to receive. The best item was the chicken and spinach ravioli, which was the best thing I tasted all night. But the other two pasta trio items were barely edible, one wasn't even worth eating all of a serving. There was an acceptable spiral pasta with what tasted like Lidia's jarred sauce on top of it. Then there was an awful dish with frozen shrimp in it. It tasted like something I would have bought in the frozen section of Wal-Mart and heated up on the stove, only to throw it away. Very poor quality and very disappointing. Overall, the meal and service was subpar and did not live up to the reviews I've read online. I'd probably go to Olive Garden or Fazoli's before I ever eat at Lidia's again. And if anyone I know wants to go there, I'd steer them away. The meal was way too expensive for the quality delivered. I expected better. On a side note - the night we went, the bathrooms smelled horrible. Like the sewer was backed up and no one had noticed or tried to do anything about it. It certainly didn't add to the evening.

My first recommendation is to request to be seated in Randi's section if she's working. Her customer service is superb and her ability to more than adequately describe the dishes was great. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice and the colors are rich and dark, with some good blown glass/stained glass contrast. We both ordered the pasta trio. It is served table side, all you can eat, and by friendly staff that may not quite speak English but can definitely spoon some pasta on your plate with a smile. The three options that night were: A four cheese ravioli. Fantastic, large raviolis that were well stuffed and amazing. A white sauce and thin noodle with crab and lobster. I forget the name.. but not the taste. Fantastic. A spiral noodle with red sauce made with a beef and pork meat mix. I am unable to eat beef or pork and once Randi found out she sped off immediately to have me a vegetarian option made. My best half love the light meat additions to the sauce. This was probably her favorite. I have to add as well that when we described a preferred wine taste they brought back a Lambrusco, which was exactly what I was thinking but wasn't able to remember the name. Their scotch selection is quite nice as well. Oban 14 anyone? :)

The best Italian in the city by far! Great location, great atmosphere. Love the new outdoor patio/greenhouse space. The pasta is so dang fresh! Amazing. If you have the opportunity to eat the Pear/Cheese Ravioli with the pepper sauce. . . DO IT! It's mouth watering. (It's obviously called something much more fancy on their menu. Also, teramisu. . . fantastic. The servers all have such a good time at work. Love it!

I love Lidia's tv show so was excited to go to this restaurant but was very disappointed by the experience. From the very start, the server was hell-bent on upselling us and turning our table as fast as humanly possible. He started by trying to sell my husband and I a bottle of wine despite the fact I am very obviously pregnant. When that didn't fly, he left my husband with the extensive wine list for about 90 seconds before coming back to take a drinks and appetizer order. This pacing continued throughout the whole meal. The last straw for me was when I was still working on a hearty plate of pasta and he presented my husband with the dessert menu. That's just straight up rude as far as I'm concerned. The only time he wasn't hovering was when I asked for a refill on my water, when he returned 5 minutes later (to try and box up my food mid fork-full) and I said I still needed water he cursed his "G** damned" bus boy--um no, you being upset with him and using that language does not make it ok, it makes it worse. The food was just ok--I was so bothered by the pace of the meal I couldn't give it a full review. If you want something that is the zen opposite of a leisurely Italian dinner, I guess this might be your spot. I suppose it might be okay for a larger group or business lunch but certainly not a romantic dinner...
