Damien Nichols makes a pretty convincing case for why he took the deal he did--an Alford plea, in which he was credited for time served. It would be nice to fantasize that he could endure the misery a bit longer for the sake of principle, but Echols drives home why that logic only makes sense to those on the outside:

"I made this decision because I did not want to spend another day of my life behind those bars...Sometimes justice is neither pretty nor is it perfect, but it was important to take this opportunity to be free."
