Fascinating account of the 1904 Marathon courtesy of Ed Gresser (www.prorgressive-economy.org), of perhaps the most dangerous and worst-run Olympic event ever.

From Ed, with a focus on pages 52-55: “Two contestants nearly died, one collapsing from dust inhalation and winner Thomas Hicks nearly killed by his managers, who refused to give him water during the race and instead forced him to drink brandy and rat poison as “stimulants.” Hicks began to hallucinate and nearly died after crossing the finish line. Among the 30 other runners, two collapsed from heat, dehydration, and the dust kicked up by automobiles on the course, and ten dropped out after drinking contaminated water.  Still another was chased off the course by a dog. Clever New Yorker Fred Lorz, meanwhile, dropped out after 9 miles, hitched a ride on a car until he was close to the finish line, then jumped back in from the sidelines and pretended to have won.”

A short history of the itinerant Nets of Teaneck, Long Island (Commack and Nassau), Piscataway, East Rutherford, Newark, and finally Brooklyn.  They were in the wilderness (if you can call  a tour of metro NY suburbs "wilderness) for 45 years.  If any fans managed to stay with them all those years, they deserve a medal...or perhaps just some of Orlando's former Magic.

This is the most amazing Creole version of "all spice" you will ever find. You can go heavy or light. It's great on fish, chicken or meats. I use it all the time. (not a paid ad, just a fan)

Thanks to Alan Sepinwall for putting in print what I have been thinking.  The Knicks are out of their ever loving minds if they let Jeremy Lin walk away for nothing.  Nothing.  They could trade him later for draft picks. They could dump his salary in year 3 in a trade as an expiring contract.  They can avoid the big luxury tax bill and still keep a serviceable and possibly great player.  But they choose to let him walk for nothing? Nothing!  Why should I still root for a team that doesn't care a lick about their fans?  I left the Mets when they traded Seaver.  Never looked back.  But at least they got something for him.  The Knicks got NOTHING.  This could haunt them like the Nets letting Dr. J go for a bag of balls and some donuts.

@sepinwall was irked enough about the Knicks/Lin situation that he wrote this:

With affection for my friends/fans of the Red Sox, this Yankee fan can still appreciate the little bandbox on Yawkey Way, and the history contained within and on its walls.
