When we moved into our home, our landlord informed us that hunting wild boar was a popular pastime in our village. Of course, we haven’t seen the slightest hint of a boar in three years. But perhaps this awareness of living “amongst wild beasts” has left me with a skewed perception of my survival skills. That might explain why I packed up my husband and dog and brought them to a wolf park.

Going out to see live music is so much more than just listening to music with your ears. It is also an experience you feel with your body, including refreshing the mind. Wiesbaden has a fantastic live music scene with so many opportunities to enjoy different genres of music.

Living in Germany would not be complete without a visit to neighboring Belgium, especially when that particular neighbor is hosting a beer fest entitled “The Place to Beer”.

Would you like to see through the eyes of the Lorelei, the legendary mermaid? Head to Bornich to take in the spectacular view from high above the Rhein River. You will also have an unforgettable experience driving along the winding road to where the supposedly siren sat. The picturesque views include boats on the river, the dotting of historic towns and several beautiful castles perched above.

This post was supposed to be a fun take on making Krapfen (those jelly filled donuts you see at Fasching festivals) at home to celebrate Fasching. But I’m going to level with you, things took a turn.

Wondering where I went wrong? That question will be haunting me nightly as well, but I suspect it was with having the idea to make jelly filled donuts from scratch. So I beg you not to try this.

This past week with my group of travelers we discovered the towns of Bonndorf and Bad Dürrheim in the Black Forest. After the suggestion of my German language teacher, I watched the YouTube channel SWR1 TV. On this channel is a show called “Kaffee oder Tee” in which perfect Deutsch is spoken as well as local and regional announcements are aired. When recently watching an episode, I discovered information about Fasching (Fastnet) museums in the Black Forest.

I’m definitely a small town girl, and there is no doubt about it. But don’t get me wrong, I also love the bright lights and big cities for their electric heartbeat. However, where I rest my head at the end of the day and spend most of my time is in tiny, little towns.
