We are excited that former +Dallas Museum of Art Director, Maxwell L. Anderson, will be joining #Atlanta's Souls Grown Deep Foundation as its new president! The Souls Grown Deep Foundation works to preserve and promote works by self-taught (mostly Southern) African-American #artists. The Foundation grew from the collection and #scholarship of William S. Arnett. The addition of Mr. Anderson marks a period of increasing momentum and growth for the Foundation, with plans to extend their works to more important public collections. Mr. Anderson will direct the Foundation’s operations along with his current job, as Executive Director of the +New Cities Foundation, a #nonprofit urban think tank. For more information on Mr. Anderson’s appointment, visit: ow.ly/pyOX301H6Lf. And to find out more about the Foundation and their work in the #South, visit their website at: ow.ly/hKU0301H7Q3.

South Arts mourns the loss of the legendary #bluegrass #musician and recipient of the 1984 +National Endowment for the Arts (#NEA) National Heritage Fellowship and 2004 National Medal of Arts, Dr. Ralph Stanley. Dr. Stanley, who began ballad #singing and playing the claw-hammer-style banjo at an early age with his brother Carter, started the widely acclaimed bluegrass band, the Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys, in the 1940s. In addition to starting two successful bands (the second after his brother's passing), Dr. Stanley was a member of the Grand Ole Opry and the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, and named a Library of Congress Living Legend and a fellow of the American Academy of #Arts and Sciences.

In regards to #songwriting, Dr. Stanley has said, “It's something that comes to you. I might write one tonight and I might not write another one for three years. It just hits you, comes on your mind.”

Visit the NEA website for more details on Dr. Stanley's impressive life and #music career: ow.ly/M8is301H8tS. Photo of Dr. Stanley was taken by Tom Pich and courtesy of the NEA.

We are thrilled to share that local #Atlanta-based #artist Martin Dawe was asked to create a statue of #MartinLutherKing, Jr. that will stand on the #Georgia Capitol grounds, after the recent passing of sculptor Andy Davis. The overall process involved in planning the sculpture project would not be possible without the dedication and work of Gov. Nathan Deal, Rep. Calvin Smyre (Columbus), and the Georgia #Arts Standards Commission Selection Committee. The statue, which plans to be unveiled in early 2017, will stand as a memento of Dr. King's legacy and work promoting, "hope, peace, justice, and #humanrights."

For more information, visit the +Southern Governors' Association (SGA) website at: ow.ly/vPnH301x12R. Photo is of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial in #Washington, #DC taken by photographer Ron Cogswell.
