In 1975, Richard Frank Adams and Anthony Corbett Sullivan were denied immigration rights on the basis of their same-sex marriage with a letter from the Los Angeles District Director of Immigration and Naturalization Services that consisted solely of this sentence: "You have failed to establish that a bona fide marital relationship can exist between two faggots."

The 1982 court decision with regard to that case was today used to throw out a lawsuit by a binational couple challenging DOMA.

I have been trawling the internet trying to find out what happened to Adams and Sullivan. Finally I tracked down a scan of a 2004 Advocate article that concludes

"[After Sullivan was ordered to leave in 1985, t]hey traveled through Europe and then sneaked back into the United States, where Sullivan, a writer, has lived illegally with Adams, who works at a law firm, ever since. Their days of public protest now over, they quietly share an apartment with their two dogs in an undisclosed location."

They met in 1971, before I was born; 40 years has passed since then. They'd now be 69 and 64. I hope they are still healthy and happy and enjoying their lives together.

Wherever you are, Adams and Sullivan, I wish you well.
