How do QR codes really work?

We all know that you can scan them and the various things they can do from there, but +Brad Iroff and I were talking at lunch a few days ago and wondered how they work from a technical standpoint. The Wikipedia article below has some great examples to show how they're read and interpreted.

In addition, I had been wondering how companies were able to stick logos and other graphics in the middle of their code, and as +Stephanie True Moss explained, it's due to the built-in error correction in them. As long as you don't eat up more than ~30% of the code (and especially not the position elements), you can overwrite chunks of the code with your logo and it'll still work.

As you would expect, it's an 8-bit system; eight of the "modules" are combined to form a single character. What's interesting is the order in which they're read. I assumed it was straight across and/or down, but it sort of jumps around a bit.

Anyhow, the Wikipedia page for QR codes is quite interesting, as they're rather complex when you dig in deep.

Only patterns...

There are only patterns, patterns on top of patterns, patterns that affect other patterns. Patterns hidden by patterns. Patterns within patterns. If you watch close, history does nothing but repeat itself.

What we call chaos is just patterns we haven't recognized. What we call random is just patterns we can't decipher. What we can't understand we call nonsense. What we can't read we call gibberish. There is no free will. There are no variables.

Careening through space and time
Introduction
I started out with a desire to be an architect fueled by the results of my first Briggs Meyer test: INTP - The Architect. That drove me quite far even after I decided that the act of architecture creation was too simple or rather limited in the number of reasonable permutations which is further limited by economic power.

What came next was this innate desire to build systems of all types. Now here I am, building away.
