Fiesta Fiesta, no time for Siesta

5th January The Cabalgata de Reyes is the Procession of the Three Wise Men. Visit capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for the biggest parade. After arriving by boat, Balthazar, Caspar, and Melchior travel along the city's streets. The local children give their present list to their favourite as the next day sees the celebration of Epiphany with gifts brought to the younger children and carbon (coal) to the naughty ones. As well as the Three Wise Men, there are plenty of colourful floats with party music and sweets being handed out.
25th January The Maratón de DISA hits the streets of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Watch some of the world's best athletes compete for the prize of winning the marathon. This year Olympic gold champion Paula Radcliffe will be bidding to become the first woman to cross the finishing line.

19th-22nd February Fresh from hosting 2014's Basketball World Cup, the newly-built Arena Gran Canaria houses the most prestigious domestic basketball tournament. As the Copa del Rey (the King's Cup) is played out on the court at this 10,000-capacity arena.
31st January-21st February Carnaval de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria sees three weeks of mayhem. The theme of this year's carnival is One Thousand and One Nights. So you'll be forgiven for thinking you've stumbled across a pantomime. What with all the revellers donning Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sinbad costumes.
20th February-31st Maspalomas As the north of the island ends their carnival season, the south begins theirs. If anything, the costumes are even more outrageous. Especially those donned by the drag queens.
January marks the start of the sales on the island. So look out for bargains, including in Anfi's shops.
