Why doesn't 2nd Gear Engage in my Ram 2500 Diesel Truck? When your truck is unable to Engage 2nd Gear, it could be a few issues. One of which is that there could be Internal Electrical Issues causing it to not Engage. There could also be some Internal Mechanical Issues as well. In this instance, the Transmission Band wore out causing this issue. The Transmission Band acts as a "brake" for the Transmission not allowing the Internal Drum to rotate. When the friction material on the band wears off and becomes burnt or worn, the band is unable to do its job in stopping this rotation causing your truck's Transmission to have issues. The best thing to do is to take it to a certified mechanic and have a diagnostic done before any more serious issues arise.
