Eye tracking inside the Oculus Rift: Cognitive computing to help persons with dementia
A current project at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence explores how cognitive computing systems can interact with people in real time. One of the goals is to develop technologies for helping persons with dementia to cope with every-day situations, such as crossing the street, or remembering to take their medication. The researchers use the SMI Eye Tracking Upgrade for the Oculus Rift DK2 HMD with the SMI Unity plug-in to integrate a person’s gaze with real and virtual environments.

Eye tracking inside the Oculus Rift: Virtual interactive supermarket

Marketers seek to test campaigns at early stages of development - ideally with the possibility to compare various concept iterations. This is why X-Ingredient - a dutch company  - designed a virtual, interactive supermarket which gives their clients the possibility to measure shopper behaviour in different manipulated settings. They combine the SMI Eye Tracking Upgrade for the Oculus Rift DK2 with an eMotiv headset to measure brain activity.

Peter Colee, X-Ingredient: "Before working with the HMD solution, we did several studies with eye tracking and a projection where we basicly measured shelf scanning after a linear supermarket visit with different campaigns. Now, we have the possibility to really measure behaviour in a fully immersive virtual environment while eye tracking enables us to see what the brain activity responds to."

Neuromarketing Workshop

In order to keep up with today's fast changing digital world, managers and researchers need outstanding competences. Traditional research and management methods alone can’t hold up to the requirements which are necessary in the digitalization process.

The 4-day Neuromarketing Workshop at HMS will support managers in understanding implicit processes of today’s dynamic consumer behavior. It gives participants an extensive insight into neuromarketing approaches which help to explore the consumers’ subconscious needs more deeply.

For those, who want to gain deeper insights into neuromarketing and neurostrategy, Hamburg Media School also offers an 1-year program, which is concluded with a qualified certificate.

NEW SMI Plug-in for Translog-II: Connect Eye Tracking to Translation and Applied Linguistics Research

A new eye tracking plug-in for Translog-II, a standard software tool in translation research, allows to analyze visual patterns in translation, computer-based reading and writing tasks. The interface is ready in time for the conference of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS) starting today in Brazil. The Translog innovators hold a workshop at the conference supported with a SMI RED250mobile.

The SMI plug-in enables users to automatically log and synchronize gaze and reading behavior with keyboard and mouse operations and combine it with verbal protocols. The quantitative data helps to understand processes in translation tasks such as orientation, construction of meaning, text production and final revision.

The SMI plug-in connects various SMI Remote Eye Tracking Hardware and is fully integrated in the interface of the open source Translog-II software.  It has been developed in close collaboration with the Translog innovators and is designed to inform the development of advanced translation research, translation technology and of new translator education tools.

SMI Eye Tracking Glasses: The power-accuracy trade-off in soccer is revealed by players' eyes

The Sport and Exercise Science Research Group (SESRG) at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge (UK) investigated how a soccer kicker’s visual search strategy is affected during different types of penalty kicks.

Investigating 96 penalty kicks from 12 University footballers, researchers found different visual search strategies for the two different kinds of kicks.

Remote eye tracking: How doctors divide attention between digital medical records and patients
Are physicians paying enough attention to patients? Nadir Weibel and his team at the University of California, San Diego, address this question using their Lab-in-a-Box solution. Lab-in-a-Box is a complete data collection infrastructure which can be easily transported on site and set up in minutes. It includes SMI’s remote eye tracking system for recording eye movements. For analysis, the collected datastream is synchronized with data streams from other sources, such as motion and audio, using dedicated software.

US Governor Gary Herbert beim DFKI: Virtueller Spaziergang mit Eye Tracking HMD
