Too Rich to be Legally Accountable now a legitimate, legally binding defense

That's right, the rich are now officially  -- that is to say, legally -- above the law.

Many of us, especially minorities and poor folks, have known for a long time that the rich are de facto above the law. (Just ask all those bankers who stole billions but aren't in prison.)  But apparently, that's not good enough. Now they are officially above the law, in the sense that, if they are convicted of a crime (up to and including killing multiple people), they can escape punishment simply by claiming that "I'm rich, so I cannot be expected to understand that my actions have consequences". Or, in the exact words of Psychologist G. Dick Miller, who testified for the defense, "his family felt that wealth bought privilege and there was no rational link between behavior and consequences."

This argument got the defendant, Ethan Crouch, a sentence of "probation" at a resort where he can ride horses. (That's right: no time served. For killing four people.) Now, with that sentence, not only is it factually true that there are no consequences for Crouch's actions, it is also now legally set by precedent that rich people can legally escape consequences for their actions simply by reminding the judge that they're rich. Yes, this was always true. But now it's legal. (If you don't think defense lawyers for rich people will cite this precedent in future cases, then you have not been paying attention.)

The "law" is not a law if it does not apply equally to everyone. Instead, it is merely a suggestion.

Discussion question: If someone is not bound by the law, then should they be protected by the law?
