She went to the dance with the sad face looking back at her in her pocket mirror. A corsage she'd made out of aluminum foil and a safety pin clung to her breast. Nobody else saw that the pin bit through more than the yellow hand-me-down dress; the teardrop of blood echoing as only a shadow in the dim light to the uncaring eyes surrounding her. She barely felt it anymore...

But the pin still hurt.

He'd asked her to go, but he wasn't there. He'd had a date two nights earlier. A date with an old, paint-stained rope from his stepdad's tool shed, dining on pilfered scotch and a pharmacy bottle full of blues. A date that left him hanging and took his breath away. A date that made him late to the dance with her.

She came anyway. Tear-stained, she danced with her mirror and tugged at the corsage. She barely felt it anymore...

But she wouldn't let the pin stop hurting.

She danced as though her feet didn't touch the floor, just like him. She danced as though nobody saw while fearing that they all did, just like him. She felt at peace with her loneliness, just like him. She made up her mind...

She went to the roof with the smiling face looking back at her in her pocket mirror. She went alone; went with a boy who stood her up for a date with a rope that left him hanging two nights earlier. She had a date with the wind, and her teardrops streaked across her temples like the trail of blood between her breasts.

Then the pin stopped hurting.

Pretty much any Nier game summary:

First few hours: "Oh wow... I could almost jerk off to this. Uncomfortable."
Upon first completion/initial introduction to story: "I... uh, wasn't prepared for these feels."
Fully immersed (about halfway through): "I'm ready to kill myself from the sheer depression this game is causing, but I have to (insert random heart-wrenching-yet-ultimately-unnecessary mission(s) here) first."
Nearing the end: "I've covered a wide range of courses and read more philosophy texts than any person has any business reading and I'm STILL being dragged into a greater existential crisis than I've ever experienced before..."
Completion (kind of - trust me, it's never--NEVER!--fully completed!): stares blankly at the TV screen well after it's been turned off, tears rolling down cheeks... no sobs to be heard (except those in your soul)
