Fields.
Enjoying the colours and textures of fields in the bright sunshine. A single white cloud graces the scene.

The Altar
Perched high above the ocean just south of Sydney the relatively soft sandstone on these rock shelves has been sculpted by the wind into fantastic shapes more reminiscent of dry desert landscapes than the seashore. This formation sits right on the cliff edge and reminds me of an altar fashioned by some ancient sculptor.

Paperbark Swamp
Paperbark trees (melaleuca) are found all over Australia, often thriving in low lying saltpans and saturated soils where most other species would be unable to cope.
Many species are highly valued for the oil that can be distilled from their leaves. Melaleuca (or tea tree) oil has long been known to possess potent antibacterial and antifungal properties.
The scene here is bathed in rich afternoon sunlight.

Rainforest Trek
Hiking through the rainforest in the mountains of south-east Queensland.
These ranges were formed by a chain of long-extinct volcanos. The mountain sides are cloaked with subtropical rainforest and are alive with a wide variety of insects, reptiles and birdlife. The region comprises several national parks and is protected as part of the Gondwana Rainforests UNESCO World Heritage area.

Portrait of a Purple Swamphen
A high-key style portrait of a Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio).
The Purple Swamphen is a waterbird found along the east coast of Australia and in the north island of New Zealand (where they are known as Pukekos). As suggested by their name they inhabit swamps and marshlands, nesting in reed beds. They are from the rail family and are closely related to other types of swamphens found in western Europe and north Africa. Adults are roughly the size of a large chicken.

Enveloped
Silhouetted against a cloud of steam, these trees were slowly killed as the hot spring by which they sprouted grew over time to envelop them. The steam is rich with the smell of sulphur from the volcanic gases bubbling up through the water.
This photograph was taken at Rotorua in the North Island of New Zealand. Rotorua is located in the heart of the Taupo volcanic zone and is famous for its thermal pools, geysers, and silica terraces.

Sky Light
Early morning at Mare's Leg Cove.
Mare's Leg Cove is on the Coromandel Peninsula, on the eastern coast of New Zealand's north island. The peninsula is about 80 km long and comprises a rugged and mountainous spine fringed by pristine sandy beaches. Limestone cliffs are being eroded by the sea leaving sea stacks like the one pictured here.

A view over the rock pool at North Narrabeen, a beachside suburb of Sydney. It's quiet and still at this time of morning with sunrise still 30 minutes away.

Red Browed Finch
The Red Browed Finch (sometimes known as the Red-Browed Firetail) (Neochmia temporalis) inhabits mangroves and the banks of creeks along the eastern coast of Australia. The birds are often found in large flocks, darting amongst the tall grasses looking for seed.
Adults are approximately 12 cm long. They feature a grey breast, olive wings and a distinctive scarlet red mask.
