Watching our work become a vital part of patient care was a tremendous professional reward.

One thing I think people who build software don't get to experience enough is other people using their software. I don't mean in the "user testing" sense. I mean in the every day sense. And I don't mean this in a "learn how to make your software better" sense either (although that's obviously good). I mean in a job satisfaction sense.

Today +Cam Gross sent the project team of CrossCare (which includes myself, +Mike Haeg and +Peter Schwarz) photos of the medical clinics in Peru using the software we had designed and built. Real people doing real work in situ. I cannot tell you how important these photos are to me, and it's something I know many designers and devs never get to see of their own work.

It's one of the reasons I loved working at the +Walker Art Center so much. Every day I could roam the galleries and see real people using the software I designed and helped build. People smiling, laughing, learning, and (hopefully) making their museum experience better. They weren't being watched in a testing environment or probed for feedback, they were just going about their day and my work was a small part of that. It's amazing to see.

And yet this is something many of us never get to see on our projects. I'd like to think that if we did we'd not only write better software, we'd take a lot more pride in the real value of our work. It humanizes it, it makes it real. We need to see more of that. It's incredibly powerful.
