There were some terrific AAA blockbusters playing in the multiplexes this year, but many of the best films were overlooked by movie goers. Here's my carefully considered list of the 10 most underrated movies of 2014! WHAT MOVIE DO YOU THINK GOT UNFAIRLY OVERLOOKED THIS YEAR?

Will the new film "Big Hero 6" continue Disney's winning streak (Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, Tangled)? Or will it betray the spirit of its comic book source material?

This week I welcomed Peter Rubin and Chris Kophler to the Game|Life podcast. They were confused, as it's their podcast, not mine. I gave my take on the promising new demo of Return of the Obra Dinn, and Kohler dropped some hints about Sunset Overdrive. Look for his full review when the embargo lifts. http://www.wired.com/2014/10/gamelife-podcast-episode-131/

NEW ANGRY NERD RANT: Fangs a lot, Hollywood! The new film Dracula Untold ruins the mystery of the coolest villain ever by filling in his boring backstory.  Learning precisely how Vlad became a vampire is like learning that the Force runs on Midi-chlorians!

+Tim Jordan I kinda liked the mystery of not knowing exactly how it worked. Like, Lucas has said that he knows in his mind about Yoda's history and his homeworld, but he never wanted to explain any of that. I like the fact that we'll never know that!

END OF AN ERA: For the first time in 50+ yrs, you won't find a block of Saturday Morning Cartoons on broadcast today. http://gizmodo.com/this-is-the-first-weekend-in-america-with-no-saturday-m-1642441646
Saturday morning American broadcast TV was once animation's home field. Filling a cereal bowl with artificially colored sugar pebbles and staring at the tube was every kid's weekend plan. Not any more: For the first time in 50-plus years, you won't find a block of animation on broadcast this morning. It's the end of an era.

MY LATEST RANT:  The new show Gotham is centered on a prepubescent Bruce Wayne who's still a decade away from becoming Batman. Don't worry though, the show presents the origin stories of some of Batman's future foes!

Who is this prequel-to-a-prequel FOR, exactly? Was anyone really clamoring for the detailed back story on how Oswald Cobblepot became the Penguin?

It's basically because Smallville yadda yadda yadda. Sexy teens + superhero tropes = $$$.

Why do I have zero interest in Shrek 5, Despicable Me 3, Ice Age 5, or Madagascar 4...but I'm excited about spinoffs about Puss in Boots, Minions, Penguins, and Scrat? I think it's because spinoffs dodge many of the debilitating symptoms of sequel-itis! What do you think?

MY LATEST RANT ON HORROR CLICHES: I was unable to settle on a single topic for this episode, as there are so many lazy overfamiliar tropes being trotted out in the horror genre. I went on a serial ranting spree.

What lame horror cliches do you hate? Let me know in the comments!

NEW ANGRY NERD RANT: WHEN UK TV SHOWS ARE REMADE IN THE US. The new FOX series Gracpoint (based on the ITV series Broadchurch) got me thinking about what tends to work and what doesn't went shows are brought across the Atlantic.

Many of the timeless masterpieces of American TV were based on a UK series: The Office, House of Cards, All in the Family, Shameless, Sanford & Son, Three's Company... Yet there have been THREE failed attempts to Americanize Fawlty Towers, and the US version of the IT Crowd with Joel McHale is dreadful. (Go find the un-aired pilot on the torrents, ugh.)

I give my take on the differences btwn UK & US TV and whether Gracepoint will be a hit in the video. Now I want to know--what UK TV show would you most like to see remade for American TV?  (Don't say Doctor Who--they tried that in 1996 with 7th Dr., Sylvester McCoy) http://youtu.be/HeqfENnVPIc
