I have always been fascinated by the engineering feats required by our modern telecommunications systems – especially by the laying of the transoceanic lines. TIL sharks are one of the many challenges undersea lines face. Back in the day if your transatlantic call got dropped it could have been due to a shark biting into the cable and getting fried.

"Electrical interference has no affect on fiber signal - which is transmitted by light as opposed to electrical pulses - but it did happen to have an affect on passing sharks. Highly sensitive to electric fields, sharks would be whipped into a feeding frenzy and would attack the line until the voltage killed them.... Due to the numerous prolonged outages, shark shielding was deployed alongside subsequent trans-Atlantic cables. "

Wow. Dude had to eject from his fighter plane above a giant storm and spent the next 40 minutes falling through the storm (and being pulled back into it over and over again) before finally landing, alive.

This is interesting: http://worrydream.com/ABriefRantOnTheFutureOfInteractionDesign/

A vision of interaction design's potential future (brought to you by Microsoft and GM).

One thing I find myself continually asking is "does this new interaction design/paradigm make doing this task easier for the user?" In some cases, yes, but in many others, no. To use all of those sophisticated interactions, a user must first learn to all the cues and controls of that app, whether it's augmented reality glasses or touch-capable video tabletops. And people hate to have to learn to use new interfaces.

The other interesting thing here is the relationship between the user and their computer-powered devices – it's a very close, effortless connection. The computer predicts what the user wants to see and how they want to interact with that, and facilitates that interaction.

My mind is blown that technology and machine learning have almost progressed far enough for this to be a reality. But while the hardware may make it possible, I think interaction design itself still has a ways to go in creating an intuitive, information-rich yet unobtrusive interface for this new technology. We have a good start, I think, with the latest iPhones, but the future calls for a more radical rethinking of what information looks and acts like.
It's a lot of this sort of thing. As it happens, designing Future Interfaces For The Future used to be my line of work. I had the opportunity to design with real working prototypes, not green scre...

Finished Ringworld this weekend. Excellent sci-fi, fast-paced and not too pulp-y. Larry Niven is no Margaret Atwood, but Ringworld is still a satisfying take on the whole human/alien topic. Plus there are spaceships. :)
