TONIGHT! 'Confronting Injustice: in conversation with authors Janet Merlo & Thelma Wheatley' @ Another Story Bookshop: 7:00pm! Please join us. #femlitcan #CanLit #justice #socialjustice #authorevent #Toronto

A former RCMP officer and disability advocate read from and discuss their explosive exposés of institutionalized failure to protect, and setting the record straight.

Janet Merlo retired from the RCMP in 2010 after a 20-year career. In 2007, she wrote a letter to the RCMP describing her experiences of sexual harassment in the Nanaimo, British Columbia detachment. The RCMP's internal investigators concluded her claim was unfounded and unsubstantiated, despite interviewing other female officers with similar experiences. In 2012, Janet began a class action lawsuit against the RCMP and the Government of Canada. In October 2016, the RCMP agreed to a settlement, the terms of which include a national public apology, numerous change initiatives and $100 million in financial compensation for current and former female employees who were victims of workplace harassment, bullying or discrimination based on their gender or sexual orientation. In January 2017, the court certified the lawsuit as a class action and a Federal Court justice is expected to sign the settlement on May 24. Approximately 950 women have registered as class members.

The settlement agreement and schedules are set out here: https://www.callkleinlawyers.com/class-actions/current/rcmp/

Thelma Wheatley is Past president of Autism Society Ontario, Peel Region, Wheatley continues to be in demand as a speaker on violence and autism. She is on the Board of the Friends of the Archives, Museum of Mental Health, an CAMH. A $1-billion class-action lawsuit was recently won against the government of Ontario and the Orillia institution for the "feeble-minded" for failure to provide proper care and protection for those living within its walls.
