Stephen has been the evening anchor at WXYZ TV, Detroit since 2002. Before that Stephen anchored the evening news at WCBS TV New York and worked as a correspondent for CBS network, including extensive coverage from Ground Zero after the 9-11 attacks.
He started his journalism career in 1977 in Greeley, CO working as a freelance photographer for the Greeley Tribune newspaper. He moved into radio and worked at KYOU, Greeley, KLOV Loveland and KIIQ Colorado Springs before moving to television in 1979.
A couple years as photographer, producer, reporter and anchor at KRDO in Colorado Springs were followed by 3 years at KSN (previously KARD) in Wichita, KS. Stephen moved to Washington DC to run a satellite bureau for Denver's KCNC TV in 1983.
A year later he was called back to Denver to anchor KCNC's morning and noon newscasts. In 1988 Stephen moved to San Diego as weekend anchor at KGTV, then in short order was named primary evening anchor until his move to New York in 1997.
Stephen's career has taken him to far-flung points on the globe covering stores such as the Bosnian and Somalian conflicts, the LA riots and Pope John Paul II's historic trip to Havana. He has won numerous awards including local Emmys, Golden Microphones and IRE Investigative awards.
Stephen has revisited his early career and now shoots and edits his own stories. He also acts as ringleader for the #backchannel... a highly interactive Twitter community.
In his spare time Stephen is an active singer/songwriter with a lofty goal of getting one of his songs cut by a major Nashville recording artist.
He lives in Oakland County Michigan with his wife, two daughters, a golden retriever and an unsociable cat.
