North Road introduces new Nordic cuisine to London - modern European cuisine with a Scandinavian twist. We love pickling, smoking, and even rolling food in burnt hay.

I was a frequent customer at Fig, the first boutique restaurant the same people opened and still run in Islington, London. No matter how much I wish to support these guys, my experience at North Road was a disaster. In North Road, gone are the intimacy and idiosyncratic decor of Fig. Even worse... gone is the food - literally. The gastronomic experience was disappointing. A friend and I booked a table; on the phone we told the restaurant manager we're vegetarian. When we were given our menus there was absolutely no vegetarian option! We have no problem with other people eating meat or a place serving meat, as long as there is at least one thing we can eat that does not involve killing an animal. Well, after we said to our waiter that we are vegetarian, he spoke to the chef who was going to create something special for us, which we were very much looking forward to. The decor was Nordic pseudo-minimalist and main-stream - no design statement, character or quirkiness there what so ever - with an air of pretentiousness. First came a starter of sliced vegetables prepared in different ways. It looked great - the slices were so thin, they were translucent. Three special thumb-sized bread buns came too. It was a nice starter, slightly on the ungenerous side of the spectrum in terms of portion size. So far so good. About 20 minutes later - and that's a long wait for a restaurant which was not very busy - we received 4 small vegetable cubes, 2 leaves of cabbage, half a chive stem... am I missing something? Oh yes, the main course, which never came. That was it. This portion would be considered small for a baby, for two male adults, the ungenerous size was shocking and offensive! It was around probably 100gr. We explained to the manager that our vegetarian dish seemed more like someone else's spare garnish, and that in fact in order for us to receive enough nourishment our portion would need to be twice the size of a meat-eater's portion, rather than a quarter. She apologized and explained that the chef is not used to cooking vegetarian food - which is a lie, because the exact same chef has cooked many a veggie meals for us in his previous establishment. All this, with 2 bottles of sparkling water and no alcohol came to about £45! We paid and stormed off. We were still so hungry that we ended up in a gorgeous Vietnamese restaurant across the road laughing about our experience while eating our freshly made summer roles. To sum up: if you must go to North Road just for the sake of it, make sure you have a nourishing meal before. If you are a vegetarian, just don't bother.
