A screenshot of an upcoming feature in Laidout: nodes! These are just baby steps. There's a long way to go yet before they are truly useable. Started to make image cross linking easier in the engraver tool, nodes are so useful, I plan to integrate them in many places. Also experimenting with libgegl, since it is so easy to use, fundamentally node based already, with easy querying functions that make mapping to a user interface somewhat easy.

Update on my symmetric tiling clone tool.. Unfortunately, I'm not going to the Libre Graphics Meeting this year, but in sympathy, I'm trying to do my own Laidout code sprint.

Another Libre Graphics Meeting come and gone. Thanks a lot to everyone who came to the Laidout Engraving workshop, and exposed so many bugs! I think I've fixed and committed most of them. LGM is always a fantastic event to see the variety of approaches and techniques people use to make art with open source software. Now back to the keyboard to smooth out all the new features in Laidout!

I'm taking a break from working on the Engraving tool to finish conversion to rendering with cairo, which makes possible not only better rendering of paths and meshes, but also a text tool! Here's a very basic text tool experiment, to get my feet wet with the myriad coding issues involved in text layout and fonts.

Some of the nuttier effects possible with new things in the engraver tool! In this case, a circular mesh, with randomized points on the linear line type, and an eye shaped line profile applied to each line.

Engraver lines can now have sized automatic randomness, via OpenSimplex noise! This is one result from working on the "Direction" section of the engraver panel. A lot more to come from that eventually. Also fresh off the keyboard is a new resource backend, to make it a lot easier to share some settings between objects, particularly sharing dash or trace settings between different engraver objects. Video tutorial coming to demonstrate these new things hopefully this next weekend!
