Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe CA

From a recent visit to this beautiful part of the country. Growing up in Reno NV, I spent a good chunk of my formative years skiing, hiking and exploring this lake, it was good to be back.

On a side note, after getting out of bed at 5:30am to make a run at this shot I went through a fair amount of dormant construction work. I thought nothing of it until returning, the construction was no longer dormant and I was stopped to be informed that the road is no longer open and I would have to make a return trip around virtually the entire circumference of the lake. Well, this was a difference of either 20 minutes vs now a good 2 hours. My only option was to plead mercy and try to invoke pity for the poor out of town sleep deprived photographer, fortunately it worked, they made an exception and let me follow the contruction only pilot car through - Always seems to be some kind of adventure involved :)

"Night Lights"

A view overlooking the Palouse region of Washington State taken this past evening. The image is from one raw file and involves multiple sources of light - The Light from the stars / milky way; Lights from a farm on the bottom right; Lights from the city of Pullman in the center and Lightning lighting up the clouds on the left.

Palouse Pastels

The pastel color pallet is a function of sunset light being filitered through high overcast with some additional natural outcome of luminosity adjustments. Though a bit on the painterly side, I felt the resulting color compliments work.

Wallowa Lake surrounded by the Wallowa Mountain Range.

This image was taken at what is typically the wrong time of day, mid afternoon under bright conditions with the sun high overhead. But even thought he light conditions are kind of harsh, this is the time of day, at this time of the year, where the snow in the mountain tops really light up. Earlier and later, many of the peaks get deep shadows hiding the brilliance of the snow. So, sometimes the wrong time of the day can be the right time for certain elements within a scene.

"Upper Palouse Falls"

The Palouse Falls State Park is a state treasure.  Not only is the main attraction fantastic, there is a wonderful system of trails that offer a unique hiking experience including this trail down to the upper canyon and upper palouse falls.  The trail system is in transition however, due to too many folks getting in over their heads on some of the precarious informal trails the park.  The parks system is in process of formalizing a safer more permanent trail plan.  Hopefully they will strike a good balance between access and safety.

"In Honer Of A Fallen"

A process of a photo from two years ago of an old barn on Glenwood Road in the Palouse region of Washington state.  Sadly, the barn suffered a total collapse this past winter.
