Low key bar with cool vibe for hanging out. Went here on the first snowy night of the winter. Greeted super warmly by the staff and the crowd is diverse and friendly. Come prepared, they only take cash.

I was in Washington, D.C. (for the first time in my life) for two nights this past February. Some friends and I went out one night, and were pointed to The Raven as a good bar to check out. I ordered a beer, paid with a $20 bill (they only take cash, so I had just gone to an ATM), and the girl working the bar brought back my change. As I turned to go rejoin my friends, she grabbed my arm and told me that her tip was still in the change she had brought me. Never in my life have I come across anyone who has explicitly requested a tip, much less GRABBED me and demanded it. I left her a dollar on the bar and went back to my friends, a bit angry that I had actually tipped such a rude person, but I didn't argue with her or say anything about it. After finishing my beer, I went back to the bar and stood in front of her for a solid five minutes while she refused to look at me. I finally went ahead and asked for another beer, and she just shook her head. I asked again, and she said that she had the right to deny service, and she refused to serve me again. There was a guy working the bar with her, and I asked him. Also refusing to even look at me, he just shook his head. I only had one beer that night, so it is not as if I was being cut off for having too much or for being drunk and unruly. I have never felt more alienated or discriminated against in my life, and I was never even given an explanation.

The Raven's prices are great all day, and the characters you meet in there are always interesting. The crowd skews hipster, with ironic facial hair and all, but the jukebox has a great selection and I have always had decent service. The music isn't so loud that you can actually have a conversation, and while weekends can be a little too packed, weeknights make for a perfect dive and a place to meet up.
