Sense Stations
The development of the senses should precede all other educational experiences. In children, especially between the ages of three to six, the sensorial experience is essential for laying the foundation for other areas of development.  Our Kindergarten children had a wonderful opportunity to experience activities based on the 5 senses – seeing, smelling, touching, hearing and tasting through the Sense Stations set up on May 22.  It was a culmination of the activities conducted during the month as part of the theme of “My Body”. Parents were invited for the event.

Mothers’ Day Celebrations
Mother's Day is a celebration honouring one's own mother, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society. The bond between mothers and children is one defined by love. As a mother’s prayers for her children are unending, so are the wisdom, grace, and strength they provide to their children. GIIS East Coast Campus celebrated Mothers’ Day on May 8.  As a part of the celebrations, three competitions were organized:  Digitales (Digital Story Telling Competition), an inter Campus event, Jewellery Designing Competition and Kiddos’ Lunch Bag Designing Competition, with the last two conducted on the spot. The results of Digitales will be announced at a later date.  We had a group of very enthusiastic and creative mothers who participated in the competitions and stunned the judges with their fine work of art. After a tough round of judgement, the Principal, Ms. Melissa Maria gave away the prizes to the winners. Wishing all Mothers ‘A Very Happy Mother’s Day’.

Lots-O-Bubbles
Kindergarten students had great fun celebrating ‘Bubbles Day’ on April 30, Research shows that playing with bubbles is actually an important accessory in the development of childrens’ gross motor skills.  It was great to watch our delighted kindergarteners chasing the little balls of wonder, trying to catch and pop them.  To tap on their creativity, they engaged in creating colourful bubble prints using bubble wraps and also by blowing bubbles and creating colourful imprints.

World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most importantly it is a celebration of reading.  In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.  In Singapore it is celebrated on April 23.  To celebrate this day, students of Classes 1 - 5 were encouraged to dress up as one of their favourite book characters and speak a line or two about the character during their English Class.  Students came dressed up as Barbie Ballerina, Spiderman, Batman, Cinderella, Princess Elsa and Anna, Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Goldilocks, Mickey Mouse, Red Riding Hood, Princess Ariel and many others.

To encourage reading, members of our PSG (Parent Support Group) donated books to our school library.

GIIS-EC Tribute to LKY
On April 9, GIIS EC paid homage to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of Singapore.  During a Special Assembly conducted in the field, students from Kindergarten upto Class 10 created a heart shaped human formation of ‘V LOVE U LKY’.   Principal, Ms Melissa Maria, addressed the gathering paying rich tributes to the great visionary and legendary leader who made Singapore a great success story.
Our students approached the community around the school and requested them to write a few lines about the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew.   Our neighbours were provided a picture of an orchid flower, the national flower of Singapore, and were requested to pen down their thoughts in each of the petals.
A mass activity was conducted by students of Classes 1 to 8 in their respective classes and students wrote short meaningful messages about Mr. Lee in their own words.  These combined messages will be put together to form a long scroll of about 35 metres which may not suitably convey our love and gratitude to this leader.
We know Singapore will never have another leader as forward looking and self-sacrificing as Mr Lee Kuan Yew.  He has been etched in our memory forever.

Our Vice Principal Mr. Sastry and Co-ordinators Ms. Shyla Menon and Ms.Rema judged the toys based on various criteria like creativity, sturdiness, presentation, explanation and scientific content. It was an enriching experience for our students.

Former Prime Minister Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, a great visionary, led a vulnerable fledgling nation to independence 50 years ago. In his own words, Singapore’s remarkable journey has been from ‘third world to first’.  Today, thanks to his vision and determination, Singapore is one of the world’s most successful countries.
Teachers and staff at GIIS-EC, observed a one minute silence in honour of the great leader and paid glowing tributes to him.
