New on Scientifica
As a college student, I spend most of my time doing math, physics, and more math. Every once and while, I am able to break free from the daily routine. Recently, when I did, what did I find but that a...

Way back last June, I discovered an article suggesting that certain types of algae might be useful as an alternate source of oil. I wrote it up, here, and mentioned I hoped to see how it panned out. M...

Impressed yet? These invertebrates are some of my favorite living animals, and are a fascinating study in how evolution works. We still barely understand extremophiles of this sort, and there's a ...

The idea is actually pretty simple. Set a series of large, plastic rings around an area you want to protect. Be able to change how stiff these rings are. Then, when an earthquake occurs, change the st...

Do you know what Wau is?

If so, please share this video. If not, check the YouTube comments or send me a direct message. Please don't put the answer in the comments, because it spoils the video a bit. It's still cool to rewatch after you figure out the answer, to check that all these properties are true, but try to figure it out just from the properties first. Enjoy!

Making science and skepticism accessible to everyone
Introduction
Scientifica Phenomena began as a summer project, as two entering college students discovered the world of skeptical and scientific blogging and podcasting. There were lots of sites dedicated to debunking and explaining science to the scientifically literate, but very few attempting to objectively turn the language of science into a form that the average internet surfer could find interesting. As two museum geeks, who spend days sharing science with an audience of 2-10 year olds and their parents, we started a blog to do the same thing on the Internet.

Now, over two years into blogging, the project continues, as we continue to write about the science and skeptical news that encouraged us to start writing in the first place.
