So the story boils down to this:  More parents this year who have no clue what common core is, and are opting out because they believe the rhetoric placed in their inbox on facebook, have come out publicly?

I just saw a post by someone who honestly believes that common core includes a 6th grade method by which a math problem, which takes 4 steps to solve, now becomes a 107 step problem.  Perhaps he's exaggerating, but it sure looks like a completely honest assessment of common core by him to me.

NONSENSE.  Common core doesn't mention any materials, any methods, or even any books or authors.  It's simply a list of skills which kids should master by grade level.

What the state does with that, or even the local school district, is of course completely up to them.  There are no national standardized tests included in common core.  Neither are there any predetermined methods by which achievement is supposed to be measured.  All of that is up to the school districts or individual states.  The only requirement is that there MUST BE SOME KIND OF MEASUREMENT OF ACHIEVEMENT, and that it should be linked to teacher assessments.  Seems common sense to me?!

Guess what - some states, especially the ones who finally noticed just how crappy their standards compared to the rest of the country had become, got a rude awakening and in true "creationism" fashion managed to butcher the standards into some kind of incoherent version of "look like you're learning a lot" vs. "actually learn something", and then promptly blamed it on "federal common core", because that's just so much easier to explain than "we suck at teaching, or overcoming teacher unions who don't want teachers to be held to any standard".
