I won a painting contest at my elementary school because I tried to emulate Bob Ross' techniques in my picture. It worked.

I had the pleasure of +Alfie Goodrich's undivided attention one afternoon. This is what we did.

Model Photography Lessons in Tokyo: Joanne Shoots Azusa

As well as the workshops I do for groups, I am often out with a single photographer and a model to work on things one-to-one. Such was recently the case when +Joanne Yu came out to get some of the lighting basics sorted out and, once that was out the way, to put it all to creative use in the second half of the session.

Azusa Ono is a great model who I have worked with a few times now. She's coming on the Miyazaki workshop I am organising in October.. there're a few places left on that if any of you are interested.

Great looking girl, good skills, doesn't need much direction at all [useful for people starting out with shooting models] and she's also got the patience of a saint and enjoys what she does: perfect!

We were shooting around a few locations in central Tokyo and tried out one or two nice little ideas. The umbrella idea was one I'd been keen to try with the right model for a while. Got a few more ideas up my sleeve for that umbrella.... which I'll be doing soon.

I finished off Joanne's RAW shots with a little RAW processing and Photoshop post-pro, then mocked them all up into this magazine-style spread; great way for someone learning to see their work in something lore like a real, finished product.

Thank you +Leo Deegan :) I'll trade you the pleasant weather in the S.F. Bay area. It's still wicked hot and humid in Tokyo. Makes it worse when the shops have pulled out their autumn collections. Who's looking to buy a cable sweater in this heat?!

+Matthew Lamb I changed jobs, so the last few months were really busy. I stopped shooting for a bit too. Anyway, I need to get out of this funk and start shooting more!

+Ali Malay thanks dude! She's such a pro, I didn't have to direct her too much. I just pushed the buttons LOL. You know what I mean? Get a girl who knows what they're doing and let them loose! Every pic is a winner ;p

+Alex Cracas thank you :)

Sorry... I was actually looking through all the shots I got of Andrew and "suzy" last night, so I kinda reinforced it in my mind just before I went to bed.  Not to worry though - they'll never see the light of G+ day  :)

Please help!!

Due to to foolish move on my part, compounded with a bad choice by another person, my main work camera has gone M.I.A., at the absolute worst time. I'm extremely sad about this, beyond embarrassed, and even heartbroken about it. That camera had become an extension of me through the birth of two kids, the earthquake, Photohoku, starting our company, and much more. To say it has helped me immensely to achieve all kinds of things, is even a gross understatement. Which is why I am so devastated about whats happened.

The story is that I went to Nakano, by bicycle, with Zoe to hang with a friend and his daughter. At one point I was holding my daughter in one hand, and searching for her shoes in my backpack (where the camera was) with the other hand. I couldn't find one shoe in the backpack, so I removed the camera from the bag, set it on the bicycle child's seat, found the shoe, put it on Zoe, set her down and she darted off as I was locking the bicycle. I ran off to chase her, leaving the camera on the bicycle seat, forgetting to put it back on my person. Shortly thereafter, I realized it wasn't in my bag and when I went back to my bike, it was gone.

It didn't appear at any of the adjacent shops or the local Koban. I have reported it as a stolen item crime with the Nakano Police department, including in the report, the serial numbers of the camera and the lens. In the camera was a 16GB card (regrettably with work photos on it). Written on the card and the camera is my name, tel, and email.

I made this flyer and gave it to all the used camera shops in Nakano and Shinjuku. I'm hopeful it will turn up but with a handful of jobs in the coming weeks, Im already trying to find a way to replace it which at the moment is a financial impossibility.

I doubt anyone has any suggestions, but if you do I'm all ears, if not just keep your eyes peeled and your fingers crossed please.

Last thing, after a couple days of despair and panic attacks, my father helped me put things in perspective by just reminding me that this situation is temporary, and that I have so much to be thankful for when so many others don't. This will work out somehow.
