I am delighted to announce that The Encounter Group, a 1970's masterwork by Louis Mendez, has been accepted into the permanent collection of Alfred University. The 53"x48" sculpture, an assemblage of cast and slab pit-fired clay elements, will reside in the Scholes Library of the NYS College of Ceramics. It will join three works, Square Head, Palomino, and Regal Head, that are already included in the permanent collection of the Alfred Ceramic Arts Museum.

Mendez SoHo Salon
Featuring
Vassia Alaykova
Sunday, April 22 @ 3PM
RSVP: sohosalon.splashthat.com

Vassia Alaykova is an artist illustrator whose work has been shown in numerous galleries in the US and abroad - New York, Boston, Santa Fe, Paris and Sofia. Her first exhibition was held in Berkeley, CA when she was 14 years old.

In 1995, Vassia entered the School of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. After completing her BFA, she enrolled in the Massachusetts College of Art to study graphics design. After a 12-year career in graphic design, a friend asked her to create illustrations for children's story. This opportunity inspired her to refocus her talent and energies on painting.

“I try to find a correlation between the present day and history, between reality and imagination, simplicity and complexity, order and chaos, science and art. Simplicity turns complex while complexity morphs into an infinite simplicity. I strive to express the complexity and deepness of human emotions and feelings through color, that’s why I use a lot of it. Color, like music and poetry, penetrates the soul, washing away the monotony of every day life.”

The Mendez SoHo Salon featuring Trudy Craney, Soprano with Gary Kessler, Guitar was a huge success. Some 60 intrepid Salon-istas braved the dreadful weather on October 29 to hear Trudy discuss her career in opera, share breathing, posture and training techniques, and best of all sing pieces by Mozart, Leisner and Granados, all ably accompanied by Gary's mellifluous guitar. The video is still in process, but please enjoy these photos from a truly memorable presentation and performance.

September 17, 2017 @ 3PM: Hannah Moon, Recent Paintings

Describing her work as a visual realization of her daily meditation, Moon’s images combine bold color and texture with manufactured objects, echoing the quietude of her meditative practice amidst an otherwise cacophonous and stressful city life.

After giving a short talk about her lives and work, Hannah will be available for one-on-one interaction with Salon attendees. There is no charge for admission, but a reservation is required for each Salon event.
