Awesome food. The portions are big. We got a shrimp plate and a trout plate. The food was awesome but there is so much that we had to bring some home. Unfortunately, seafood does not reheat well. Still good though. We eat there every no-meat Friday.

I had high hopes for this place because I had heard good things about it from other people. It started out with hush puppies that were luke warm and very bland. Which I did not eat. Then it literally took 40 minutes for our food to come out. There were only 6 tables and other people who had sat down well after us got their food before us. I didn't mind waiting if the food was going to be good. I had a triple combo with flounder, oysters and scallops. The scallops were less than warm, the oysters were warm and the fish was hot. The fries were inedible: like they had been in oil that was not hot enough for a long time. Then sat under a heat lamp for hours. I will not go here again and I would not recommend it to anyone.

The waiter tried hard & was attentive. He didn't know what the specials were though, didn't go find out, and there was no printed list of specials. Maybe they would've been better than what we ordered. There were no raw oysters on the half shell. The hushpuppies were unrecognizable even upon eating them -- like an onion ring without any onion -- but there sure were a lot of them! In short, fried breading. My husband softshell crabs were breaded within an inch of their lives. His french fries were limp & soggy. My broiled flounder was suspiciously thick -- I've never seen a flounder that thick -- and completely tasteless. My baked potato was dense and lumpy. The salad was tired iceberg lettuce, a few bits of good tomato, red onions and pre-packaged cheddar cheese (or American? who could tell?) that was tasteless. It seems unkind to complain about the decor but the artwork was appallingly bad. And to think someone had recommended Capt. John's to me! I am dumbfounded.

I go here frequently. Good food, friendly staff. Usually nice and quiet so you have the rare ability of being able to hold a conversation with whoever you are with.

We have been eating at this restaurant for 5 years. If you like seafood then this is the place for you. The food is superb and the service first class. John is an excellent chef who will adapt any of the dishes to suit your taste. He has a unique collection of art that makes the place enchanting. This is the best deal you will find in the Chapel Hill area.
