Peekaboo!

Barking deer (Muntiacus sp)

Bhutan

I was told the farmer on the other side of the hotel (Drogon Villa) had a barking deer, and the day after I asked if I could see it. The farmer and friends looked for it in the strangest of places, and I wondered how a deer could be so hard to find. I was picturing a wild deer that for some reason had found it convenient to graze on the farmer’s land and gotten habituated to people of its free will.

As I was about to give up, the owner (Dema) suddenly turned up with this beautiful calf, which was not at all afraid of me, the pink-skin from far away, nor anything else it seemed. It simply roamed freely, and had been inside Dema’s house when I came to look for it. No wonder nobody else could find it outside.

It was very curious of me, and in the blink of an eye it could stand right in my face ready to lick my lens. Perhaps it saw its own reflection? Yet it still came up to me when I put the camera away – its wet nose right in my face. As if “who are you?”

I told Dema, the farmer, to continue her activities as if I was not there, so I could experience the little one’s natural behavior and antics.

Here it is checking out the surroundings in the shed, where Dema was boiling something unknown in a huge pot over a fire. Dema was stirring every now and then, and the calf seemed as if it wanted to be close to her, the caretaker. But shortly thereafter it went along and intermittently jumped up and down like kids do. Sometimes eating grasses, tasting other things, spitting it out, and eating other things – simply testing what’s tasty and what’s not. It was amazing to see how the dogs treated it as part of them, and when it came too close even gave way.

In an upcoming post I will share more pictures and the story behind how this lovely calf came to be part of this farm, and how it reflects the close-knitted relationship the people of Bhutan have with nature.
