I love using Linux and +Ubuntu
13.10 but just occasionally it really, really irritates me. I used to be able to just plug in an external usb keyboard into the laptop and it would just work. Now it just doesn't, no indication why not, just wont recognise it. It's a working keyboard as I can quite happily plug it into a tower and its fine. USB ports are ok as well. No doubt someone decided somewhere that the existing way of working wasn't right and so has built a whole now framework to make it work in new and interesting ways whilst at the same time forgetting that in the real world plugging a usb keyboard into a niche vendors laptop(Lenovo) is something that people just expect to work.
No doubt i should raise a bug report with ubuntu but the chances are someone in canonical thinks keyboards are a thing of the past and that I have had ample time to move away from the restrictions of keyboards, I am thinking systray here, so will mark as fixed. Someone will suggest i use arch, someone will add an arcane command line fix that worked in 1996 but will probably mean that nothing will work in the future, someone else will suddenly get the idea that they should write a USB framework that really works and in 5 years time that will break the usb again when its half implemented as the latest best thing.
In the mean time I shall play around and waste a couple of hours trying to get it working and getting more frustrated, which I am fast coming to believe is the Devs way of getting back for all the inane requests and comments they get from us mere end users.
