‎"Try to imagine a culture where arguments are not viewed in terms of war, where no one wins or loses, where there is no sense of attacking or defending, gaining or losing ground. Imagine a culture where an argument is viewed as a dance, the participants are seen as performers, and the goal is to perform in a balanced and aesthetically pleasing way. In such a culture, people would view arguments differently, experience them differently, carry them out differently, and talk about them differently." - George Lakoff + Mark Johnson, "Metaphors We Live By" http://www.amazon.com/Metaphors-We-Live-George-Lakoff/dp/0226468011

from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows http://www.dictionaryofobscuresorrows.com/
Ambedo (noun) A kind of melacholic trance in which you become completely absorbed in vivid sensory details—raindrops skittering down a window, tall trees leaning in the wind, clouds of cream swirling in your coffee—which leads to a dawning awareness of the haunting fragility of life, a mood whose only known cure is the vuvuzela.

Love the 70 degree weather, but it is sad, and scary, to be watering my plants in January.

“I’ve memorized a quote from Brendan Behan. ‘I respect kindness in human beings first of all, and kindness to animals. I don’t respect the law. I have total irreverence for everything in society, except that which makes the road safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, the old men and old women warmer in the winter, happier in the summer.’
...That just about sums it up. Kindness covers all my political beliefs. No need to spell it out. I believe, if, at the end, according to our abilities, we’ve done something to make others a little happier, and ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try. I didn’t always know this, and I’m happy I lived long enough to find it out.”
From: Rober Ebert “Life Itself”. Wonderful book. Love Roger Ebert and his writing, his outlook, and the richness his blog and writing brings to the world. And love that Midwest Nice attitude. Go Chicago-landers!

We finally returned to listening to The Wave, among other books, on our drive to Phoenix. What is it about giant waves that are so fascinating?! One thing I don't understand. How is it that there are so many 48 and 54 year old world class surfers, when other sports spit men and women out so young? Big wave riding seems far harder on the body and mind than football or ballet! A fun, engrossing book, full of interesting science. So many audiobooks to listen to while driving, and so little time. I'm still not finished!

http://www.openculture.com/2011/12/ingmar_bergmans_soap_commercials.html Interesting--Ingmar Bergman made soap commercials in order to feed 7 dependents, and because, as he put it, “I have always found it difficult to feel resentment when industry comes rushing toward culture, check in hand.”
I found Dana Stevens’ summary of his commercials, at the bottom of this page, interesting.

"These birds communicate with humans. They guide humans, and possibly other large mammals (such as the Honey Badger) to bee colonies. Once the mammal opens the hive and takes the honey, the bird feeds on the remaining wax and larvae."
