So what does cancer look like? Here are some photos from the pathologist of Buddy's cancer cells.
Source / History:
Two slides are received and evaluated. 4 cm skin mass on left anterior Microscopic Description breast.
All specimens are composed of moderate numbers of mast cells mixed with cellular debris, infrequent individualized reactive mesenchymal cells, and some blood. The mast cell component has mild anisocytosis and mild anisokaryosis with a constant nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio.
Most cells are round in shape with voluminous dark purple, cytoplasmic granules at most times obscured nuclear details. Nuclei are round with smooth chromatin patterns. The background contains attendant eosinophilic inflammation and occasional accumulations of a pink fibrillar material that is suggestive of collagen degeneration. No micro organisms or fungal elements are identified.
Mast cell neoplasm.
Microscopic Interpretation (Cytology)
Fine-needle aspirate should be followed up with histological grading, since this is the most important prognostic indicator overall.
Clinical factors specific to individual patients need to be considered as well. Clinical factors that may be indicative of more aggressive biologic behavior include: Tumors arising within the preputial, subungual, muzzle and mucocutaneous sites; tumors greater than 3 cm in diameter; incomplete excision; and the presence of any systemic signs associated with release of secretory products by mast cells.
Assessment of these factors will dictate if additional diagnostic tests may be required and which therapeutic options (further surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy) are best suited for this patient.
This mast cell neoplasm is tentatively classified as a low grade tumor (grade 1 or grade 2) based on the Patnaik grading system (3 = high grade). The clinical behavior of canine mast cell tumors can be unpredictable, but in general low-grade tumors carry a favorable prognosis. Mast cell neoplasms less than 4 cm in diameter, lateral margins of 2 cm, and deep margins of 1 fascial plane were not associated with tumor recurrence in several studies. The disease status of sentinel lymph nodes is important in the formation of a more accurate prognosis; therefore, fine needle aspirates of all enlarged lymph nodes are warranted.
Thank everyone for all of you help, Love and support. Please continue to share Buddy's campaign with others.
Buddy goes in to surgery tomorrow and prayers are welcome.
Right now Buddy is laying in bed and his sister Jovie is laying on the floor next to the bed. He is wobbly on his feet so hopefully he sleeps for a while. We have a camera watching him incase he needs anything. But for now we are letting him rest.
Thanks to everyones help we were able to pay cash for Buddy's surgery and got a very small cash discount (1%), and every bit helps.
Please continue to share this campaign, as Buddy will still need help for the next month or so and hopefully pay back some of the debt caused by medical costs.
Thank you for all of your Love.
