UbuntuNet Alliance provides high speed regional and international connectivity for the research and education community in Eastern and Southern Africa. The Alliance Operates UbuntuNet, the data communications network that interconnects member National Research and Education Networks in the region and connects them to other Regional RENs worldwide and to the general internet.

UbuntuNet Alliance was established in 2005 by five emerging NRENs in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda and South Africa and announced at the World Summit on Information Society (WISIS) in Tunis in November the same year. Since then, the Alliance has promoted the development of NRENs and aimed at interconnecting them. It is registered as a trust in Malawi.
