I told Mr. and Mrs. McGinnis how sorry I was for what had happened to Riley, and I begged for forgiveness. I thought surely they would understand I was hurting, too. I thought they would realize that after the accident, my heart felt like as though it had been ripped from my chest. I loved Riley like they did.
But as I explained my regret and sorrow, Mrs. McGinnis only cried harder.
Mr. McGinnis's face flamed, and he roared, "Do you think your pathetic ‘sorry’ is going to bring her back? That's what we want! We want her back! Look at you! Not even hurt, except for a gash on your ugly face. God, I pray your life is cursed the way you cursed us! Wherever you go, whatever you do—cursed!" http://amzn.com/B00T5BD5OS

I'd met Officer Baker, a widower, three years ago when he enrolled his daughter in first grade. I liked him at first sight, but I told myself, Don't even think about it, Clare. I frequently saw him in church, and we'd stopped to chat briefly several times. A month ago he called me at school and suggested the police cell as a fundraiser at the upcoming festival. I later volunteered for the dunk tank. Didn't take long before we were Steve and Clare to each other. - See more at: http://one-minuteromance.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-cop-and-jailbird.html#sthash.aU75bT2X.dpuf

Megan says, "John, you've got to stop blaming yourself."
"I try, I try, I try. Believe me, I keep trying."
"You know what you're dealing with here?"
"What?" I ask.
"Survivor’s guilt. Happens to soldiers all the time. A guy's buddy dies, the guy survives, and he can't figure out why he's still alive. He doesn't feel right because he's not dead too. He feels guilty."
"But a soldier doesn't cause his buddy's death. An enemy roadside bomb kills him. Or a mortar round. A sniper's bullet."
"You've got to shed that blame."
I grab another breath and exhale. "You want to hear something else?"
"What?"
"The seventeenth of every month—Riley died on May seventeenth—her brother sent me a rose spray-painted black." http://amzn.com/B00T5BD5OS

My heart did a crazy flip-flop, completely unexpected. It had been a long time since I'd seen a man so attractive. Get a grip!, Katie.
Managing to avoid stammering, I said, "I'm here about the condo—two bedrooms. I'm Katherine Wells."
"Tyler O'Neill," he said. "Monica sent you?"
I nodded.
"Well," he said, "let me show you around."

Andy offered me a soft smile. He has the deepest brown eyes. "Want to tell me about it?" he asked.
"It's been almost two years..."
"Tell me anyway."
I plucked my food off the tray and set everything on the table. "All right." I explained that when Tom and I met as seniors in college, I thought—Bang!— this is love at first sight. I'd found my soul mate. But one night, after about three months, Tom told me if I was thinking marriage, he wasn't the marrying kind. "'But you're lots of fun to be with,' he said. 'A very good sport.'"
Andy shook his head. "What a jerk."

If your Dad lured your mom here," Becky said, "with the idea of killing her, that's first-degree murder. Premeditated. Life in prison."
"I can't believe it."
"Hit me," Becky said.
"What?"
"Hit me," she said again, "like we're having a fight. We'll reenact the scene."
"No way."
She stung my face with a wicked slap, making my nose twitch, my eyes water—I'd already been smacked in the face enough. "I want a divorce!" she screamed.
"Becky, cool it!"
"You creep!" She attacked me, pounding her fists against my chest. "I'm not taking your abuse any longer!"
I didn't intend to hit her hard—only a glancing, open-handed, make-believe swat. But she stepped into my blow—a half-swat, really—and dropped to the concrete floor with a thud, face down, like I'd kayoed her. Stunned at what I'd done, I stood over her. My blood raced. "God, Becky, I'm sorry." I bent and rolled her over. Her eyes were closed. I shouted her name: "Becky!" http://tinyurl.com/hovubgq

Caleb and I immediately abandoned our treadmills and headed for the lounge, where we sat at a circular table, each sipping a diet soda, and my history with Caleb Starr, a man I'd never forgotten, flashed through my mind.
We'd met at our local junior college and had dated exclusively for two years, passionately in love, we thought. But Caleb decided to drop college. "Not my thing," he'd said. He elected to enlist in the Navy, like his grandfather and his dad before him. "Marry me," he pleaded, "and our lives together will be a great adventure."

I grabbed her hand, shook it, perhaps held it a bit too long, and said, "Why wouldn't I be? It's where we met a year ago. And I'm a crafty person myself, as you know." The flush in her cheeks deepened. What a raven-haired beauty she was, hair flowing loosely in curls beyond her shoulders. Slender and willowy in jeans and a white V-neck sweater she'd not doubt made for herself.
"We need to talk," she said, her blue eyes latching on to mine.
"Yes, we do," I said, nodding. "I haven't contacted you because you asked me not to. But now it's time to talk."
"After the sale," she said, and scurried away.
