The elevator lights blinked on. I felt a gentle bump, a surge of power, and then we rode the elevator to the thirteenth floor. When the doors swished open and we stepped into the hallway, she sighed heavily.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I'm so embarrassed..." Pink crept into her cheeks. "Claustrophobic. Superstitious. Rattling on about myself...so stupid."
"Forget it," I said. "I've been a cop eight years. I've heard lots of frightened people tell me their stories."
She'd never been stuck on an elevator before. She thanked me for listening and for being so kind.

"You two chat," Aunt Phoebe said, and scurried off. "I've got things to look after in the kitchen."
Luke's eyes lowered. I realized he probably felt as awkward as I did. "This is a setup," I told him.
He nodded. "Your aunt called about the drain. Then she asked me to stay for dinner. I said I really shouldn't. I didn't know..."
"That her niece would be here."
"Exactly."
I explained my mom and dad always had Aunt Phoebe and me over for Sunday dinner—a tradition for years—but when they went on vacation, like now, Aunt Phoebe did the honors, inviting me to her place.
Luke decided to stay—because of me, I'm not sure. I have to admit a tiny part of me was glad. Besides being quite handsome, Luke seemed down to earth and easy to talk to. We were both the same age, thirty-one. Like me, he'd never married. His job as the new city planner brought him to Longville. I wondered if like me, he suffered from a broken heart.

"Hi," he said sheepishly. He was tall, sandy-haired, and clean-shaven. "I'm Dr. David Jerome. I just talked to your mom." He reached into his sport coat pocket. "I have your phone. I need to apologize," he added, his blue eyes meeting mine.
While my heart pounded like crazy, he handed me the phone. I invited him in. We sat on the edge of the couch, and he explained that he'd found the phone under a table at the food court in the mall.
Apparently he'd stopped to eat just after Mom and I had left.

Blond and still handsome, he came strolling across the dance floor to stand within inches of me. My breath caught. My heart pounded. I searched his face for a sign of pent-up anger, and I prayed for forgiveness.
"Dance, Dani?" he said softly, no hint of anger in his voice or eyes. The music was slow—a song from back in our time but my mind was reeling so fast I couldn't remember its title.
"We can't break tradition," I said, and offered a smile.

"Glad to meet you." She leaned toward. "I'll tell you a secret. Once a year I give myself a break from all the hassle. I come down here to the park to spend the afternoon and soak up the music."
"I always show up a bit at lunchtime."
"I usually don't talk to strangers," she said, "no matter how nice-looking and gentlemanly they appear to be, but since I sat down, I've had this feeling I know you..."
