Good morning, George.

I am so excited to tell you that your paintings—26 Visions—have safely arrived and were delivered to Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital (MEETH) yesterday. Everyone is anxious to ultimately see them displayed and are eagerly anticipating their beautification of MEETH and the Department of Ophthalmology. With that, we are now looking into recruiting an associate from one of the local galleries or auction houses to help with curating your artwork throughout MEETH. We are also are having the title cards/display tags created for each piece.

I know it took quite a bit of planning and coordinating to finally have your incredible gift of art make its way across the country, and I am very appreciative of your patience and all you did to help with administering the shipment of your artwork, in addition to your act of generosity. Thank you!

On behalf of our executive leadership at MEETH (Dr. Richard Braunstein and Carolyn Sweetapple) and our Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology (Dr. Celso Tello), and all who will benefit from your 26 Visions, we are very grateful to you for the generosity you bestowed and the creative, personal reflection you will impart throughout one of New York City’s staple and most innovative healthcare institutions. Your gift will undoubtedly color the environment and brighten the vision of everyone who visits MEETH and the Department of Ophthalmology.

With gratitude,
Demetrios

I had a lot of fun at UPTA in McAllen, Texas.  I lectured about my life story as a blind artist and champion runner which is the famous line under my new book title, Colors of the Wind by JL Powers who is a good friend of mine.  I shared some of my stories with the audience about Debbie who was born blind and asked me, “What color is the wind?”  I answered her, “It is a rainbow of colors!”  She loved my explanation.  I also had a book signing at Barnes and Noble on Friday.  Then I got to go to south Padre Island which is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen or been to in the world.  And believe me I am a world traveler so I should know!  I met a lot of people at the University of Texas Pan American.  I want to thank you!  Your staff was wonderful!   Keep the dream alive!  George Mendoza new Mexico 2015

Story
Introduction
the act of creation
Ironically, even though I am blind, I paint what I see. When I started having this eye problem, I was upset with these visions, the dazzling colors. I talked to a priest out at the Holy Cross Retreat House. He said, “Paint them. Make designs, pictures out of them.” This happened way back in the 70s. I never jumped on his advice because I was too busy with the Olympics. I was running 100 miles a week, so I was physically tired. It wasn’t until about seven years ago when I went through my divorce that, well, a couple of things happened. I got a flier for the American Printing House for the Blind to enter this art contest, so that’s where I did that painting “Butterfly Eyes.” From there on in, that’s when I realized, “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life.”
