FOCUS On Objects - A children's book to boost talking

How do I know whether my child needs to see a speech therapist? Speech Development follows speech milestones - babble to first words to small sentences and so on. A RED FLAG for speech development is when your child is not meeting the expected developmental steps - early intervention is important. For example if you have a 24 month old and they are not saying at least 50 words or not using small sentences (my ball, Daddy gone) - this is a red flag. It is different to a milestone. A milestone is what is expected for a child's age. At 24 months the milestone for first words is about 300+ words. Therefore it is  definite red flag (ie it would be best to call a Speech Therapist) if they are only saying 50 words or less at 24 months. Dr Sandra McMahon, Speech Pathologist, PhD points out that it is easier to put a child on the right developmental path than wait for a bigger problem to arise.

While there are public speech and language therapy services many have long waiting lists. SpeechNet offers private speech and language therapy that is mindful that most parents are busy and costs of services need to be considered. Call us to see how we can offer affordable and flexible speech and language therapy for your child.
Speech Pathologists that work with children help them in many areas - broad terms like speech and language therapy cover all of these speech pathology or speech therapy areas. "Speech" is all about talking skills - late talking toddlers might need help to start talking or to talk more. In older children speech refers to how clear their speech sounds when they talk - can they be understood, are they saying the wrong sounds, do they lisp. "Language" refers to "what" they are understanding and "what" they saying. Areas such are they using longer sentences or are they saying the correct grammatical terms (eg ranned). Speech and Language Therapy for children also covers learning skills at school - Speech Pathologists can help with children that are having problems or slow in developing reading skills, sight word reading skills, spelling, listening to instructions in class, getting into trouble as they are not paying attention to the teacher. Speech and language therapy also assists children with specific diagnosis eg ADHD, Autism, Down's syndrome. SpeechNet is linked with funding bodies such as Helping Children with Autism and Better Start, Medicare Enhanced Care Programs (helps pay for private speech and language therapy for some children) and HiCaps for Private Health Insurance.
